On our first gen Fire TV, mkv files wouldn’t play with audio. Now with our latest generation FireTV, they play but are choppy. We have to use our older Chromecast which works fine. Any ideas on how I can resolve this?
I have found with the fire tv (2 gen) that if the source is 5.1 but the receiver (or TV?) output is 2 channel the audio cuts out. Once I change the output of my receiver to 5.1 it works perfectly.
Yea, I messed with the sound modes on my Sony receiver but it didn’t help. It plays fine on our Xbox One which connects through the same switch to the router as the Fire TV, so its not a network connectivity issue. 
Try turning “off” the sound options in the plex app and let the AV receiver do its job… works for me on both versions.
I just repackage all my videos to MP4 (AVC/AAC). It’s a pain, but it avoids all sorts of problems.
So, a few things changed and now we don’t have issues anymore…
- We bought a new Samsung 4k smart TV and don’t use FireTV anymore
- I realized that I had Cat5 cable in between my desktop (Plex Server) and my router, throttling my connection to 100Mbps… :neutral:
- My hard drive that stored all of our media and the plex meta data was beginning to fail after 5 years of uptime, it has since been replaced.
I am not sure which of the changes had the biggest impact, but Plex runs quite good except for the occasional error on playback when leaving media paused for a little bit.

A: Cat5e can handle gigabit (and even short 10GbE) links just fine. That was not “throttling” anything. If both ends were gigabit, then it was running at gigabit.
B: Even 100Mbps is PLENTY of bandwidth for Plex streams - even if you had multiple streams plus doing other things.

I said Cat5, which is 100Mbps, which equates to about 11MB/s. A 1080p stream would already be using up at least half of that bandwidth. Two HD streams would not be able to run simultaneously, throw in the possibility of OneDrive, DropBox or GoogleDrive to be syncing files and my bandwidth is gone. Not to mention Plex DVR would have to connect to the HDHomeRun over that same connection. It was a big problem.

I highly doubt it was Cat5. They haven’t made those in easily 15 years. But even if you did pull one out of an antique store and use it with your new computer and router, Cat5 CAN do gigabit up to about 25 feet. Wanna try again?

It certainly was Cat5, because it was printed on the cable and I ran tests on my desktop to see max speeds were around 11MB/s. Yes, it is possible to get higher speeds than 100 Mbps out of short runs, but it certainly isn’t a guarantee.
I had some because I had been crimping my own network cable since around 2003. I have since gone through all of my old cabling and found around 10 pieces of Cat5 which I threw away.
LOL whatever you want to believe man. Pretty much all Cat5 did already meet the Cat5e standard, it was just not certified as such (unless of course you bought total garbage cable). But whatever. If you want to claim it was the fault of a 20 year old homemade patch cable that you inexplicably used, that says a lot about you.

What does it matter? Seriously? I replaced it with Cat5e and now my desktop is getting proper speeds on the network regardless of what you choose to believe or not.

If the OP’s CAT-5 cable was only using two pairs, then 11 MB/s is just about right. I’ve seen weird transfer rates when using older patch cables.
