When I add an anime series (in MKV format) having embedded ASS subtitles, these are not shown as an option. In fact I see no subtitles at all in the dropdown menu. However, if I go into media info I can see the subtitles listed there.
If I use another players such as VLC subtitles work just fine. I’ve used PLEX for a couple of years now and subtitles have worked fine in the past. I haven’t used it in a while now (been using Netflix) and now came back to it and was surprised to see that none of my animes had subtitles.
I’ve attached the XML file for one of the files, as a reference.
And in what player is it not showing?
According to the info file you added, Plex does recognize there’s a subtitle track in this file. It also states this stream is selected…
So is the stream missing as an option from a client’s pre-play screen or audio/subtitle settings – or does it simply not show during playback?
off topic… I’m always surprised what file names people finally get to work – even for tv shows and even if they’re completely off the naming schema
The stream is missing as an option. I tried on both the web client and the samsung tv client. It doesn’t seem to be client-related, but I may be wrong.
I’m attaching a screenshot where you can see no subtitles listed.
By double-checking your XML… it looks like you have created an optimized version for that video that doesn’t contain the subtitles (usually based by your account audio & subtitle settings). It appears the Plex UI is only looking at the optimized version when showing what subtitles are available.

If your life doesn’t depend on that optimized version (which is more or less the same quality except for the 2nd audio stream being transcoded to another stereo track and all re-packaged in an mp4 container vs. the original mkv)… you could try deleting that (through Plex) and afterwards perform a new analysis of the file (through Plex) to see if that’ll bring back that missing subtitle for you.
I have all my video files optimised to avoid the real-time hardware transcoding when I play them on my Samsung TV as this overloads the CPU and doesn’t let me play the files smoothly (playback stops every few seconds to allow the server to catch-up).
If you have any alternative solutions to forcefully optimising every single video file I would gladly try it!
My server is a Synology DS918+ and my player is a Samsung TV UA65KU6000KXXS 65 inch UHD 4K Flat Smart TV KU6000 Series 6.
Offtopic, although the TV can do 4K playback I stick to 1080p because my server struggles to handle it. Even if no transcoding is required, skipping forward/backward in the video file during playback is painfully slow, and everything seems less responsive. Perhaps this is an IO problem more than a CPU problem, I don’t really know. If you have any ideas or suggestions on this front that’s also welcome.
