More than one server possible for slow migration from Mac to Linux?

I have a general inquiry as I am running Plex on a 10 year old Mac with my source data on an 8 year old Synology DS1812+ and rely upon Rokus throughout the home for TVs. I would like to upgrade to a Synology DS1621XS+ as it supports 10GB ethernet but would like to migrate away from Apple to a Linux server. My experience\expertise is Windows>>Mac>>Linux so this will be a learning process. Thus, I have the following questions:

  1. Can I simultaneously configure the new server and NAS while keeping the existing one running on the network? If so, how does one “tell” the Roku which one to read?

  2. If simultaneous existence on the network is not an option, is there an optimal upgrade path? IOW, am I best to configure the new NAS, get it running with the Mac, then move the server to Linux or would I be best to get the Linux box up and running, migrate the existing NAS to it and then upgrade to the new NAS?

Thanks!
Tom

You can run multiple servers using the same Plex account. The client apps will display the libraries of the servers linked to your account or those shared with you. Usually you can customize each client to pin certain libraries to the main navigation (sidebar). If you have multiple servers, the libraries will be grouped per server if you click More in the sidebar.

You can do a migration of your server to keep your watched history / view status per item.

If you do that but want to keep the old server alive, make sure to remove the machine identifiers from the server’s preferences.xml (and rename the new server to avoid confusion).

Keep in mind: source/target folders will slightly vary if you’re moving your setup to a new platform (though macOS->Linux should be easier than Windows->*)

tom80H, thanks so much for the detailed response. I will proceed as you suggest. My apologies for the delayed acknowledgement.
