Most recent update in tar.bz2 format - HOW?!

Got it unzipped but not seeing any exe file. How are we supposed to run this update? I feel like Im missing something obvious…

truenas diy machine dedicated to plex

TrueNAS is based on FreeBSD… there’s no .exe files – those only work on Windows.
If you’re not familiar you should try to update the Plex plugin through the TrueNAS’s admin page.

Yeah I’ve tried updating the plug-in and no update is available, it says. The web still says update is available and it’s a patch for the Ddos stuff. Will face this every time there is an update I’d guess.

Which version of the Plex Media Server plug-in do you have installed (Settings > [Server Name] > General > Version; e.g. 1.21.4.4079) and what exact version of TrueNAS are you running it on?

1.21.3.4014, release p-13

From what I understand, “somebody” is packaging those Plex updates for TrueNAS and makes them available. This can cause some delays when the TrueNAS plug-in has not yet been updated, while Plex sees there’s a new version available for the platforms directly supported by Plex.

Not a TrueNAS expert myself, however I’ve found some posts and guides that indicate the way to update will highly depend on how you installed Plex on your TrueNAS:

  • installed using the official TrueNAS plugin → wait for the plug-in to update
  • you manually installed Plex using pkg → use pkgng to update
    • alternatively you could install Plex using ports in which case updating your ports would also update the Plex Media Server
  • optionally there’s scripts that support updating or even automate updating – however those are not always easy to configure and you depend on some 3rd party script to not mess up your setup
