Move Plex Metadata/Install Location

Hello - I am fairly new to Plex, and fairly new to Linux as well (which is the OS I use to run my Plex server). As I am new to Linux, I didn’t set up my computer with the best memory strategy in mind and seem to be running out of room on my root partition ("/"). I have plenty of space in my “home” partition ("/home/username"), but I haven’t found a way yet that I can move the Plex metadata and other objects stored on my HDD at the location “/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library” where all the server’s data is kept. I have a feeling there may be a way to do it, but looking at the contents of those directories, I’m a little intimidated. Any advice? (Already my server has 3.2GB of data stored there and I’m planning to add a lot more, but I’m afraid I’ll run out of space on my 20GB “/” partition - Linux has warned me a couple times about this now. I’ve tried to expand the partition, but the “home” directory is right next to it, so I don’t have room to move anything). Thanks!

I have created a collection of tips for most occasions.

Under this tag, you will see the collection.

The second one “Moving PMS’ Library” is the one you wish.

Be advised.

  1. You can put your media anywhere on /home (e.g /home/media)
  2. You can relocate the metadata to /home/plexdata as I show above.
  3. Please don’t put put actual media inside the metadata directory. That will drive it NUTS. haha

@ChuckPa - Thanks for the information! Looks like a great guide for all sorts of things. Thanks for sharing! Once I try this, I’ll let you know how it turns out.

IF I may amend my post about the location, I am migrating all the NAS products to use a PlexData share. Eventually even the Linux boxes will have one. Maybe now is a good time to jump ahead a bit and create /home/plexdata ? Its purpose would be clear and descriptive names are easiest to remember

@ChuckPa - your procedure worked marvelously! I’m now using the library at /home/plexdata, which saved me about 18GB of space (and counting) on my root partition. Thanks for your assistance! I’m glad Plex has this feature - it’s sure nice to have the flexibility of moving that directory.
