Moved Plex Server from Synology to Shield and now movies very slow to start

Hello,

I’ve been a long time Plex user and I share my library to another location, over the last few years this has been fine as the movies have had standard DTS etc, but my media viewing room now has an ATMOS setup and various other bits, the media i’m playing tends to have ATMOS tracks on it. That wasn’t a problem for me viewing it in my house on my own kit.

The old setup was - Synology DS415+ NAS, Running the Server and Hosting the files, around the house was a nVidia shield and a Samsung Smart TV etc. Running from the NAS everything worked perfectly but the NAS didnt have the beans to transcode for my external viewing.

I always resisted running the server off the shield as if one device can do everything then that would have been great. But since i needed some power, the options were to buy another £500 NAS, and upgrade to Plex pass for HW transcoding, or utilise something i already owned and move my server to the Shield.

I did this, mapping a newwork drive from the shield to the NAS. My main problem is that any movie now takes ages to start. We’re talking around 30 seconds to a minute, when everything was on my NAS everything was instant.

Everything is running on business switches, everything running wired at 1GB. Once the movie starts, it says direct play and does play fine, if it try to fast forward, or skip a chapter i’ll have to wait again. When kids use the system, this doesnt go down too well.

Hopefully someone can help, i dont know what version of Plex the shield is running but i guess it wasn’t as up to date as what i had on my NAS…

Thanks

Dave

Server Version#: Latest for Shield
Player Version#: Shield

The issue is probably that smb greater than one on the nas is causing this. It is still a bug in the latest 7.2.3 shield experience as per nvidia. Simply in your nas under file services>smb>advanced set min and max smb to 1, then remount the shares on the shield. Should be fine after that.
My current shield PMS Version 1.14.1.5490.
You could always run both servers. The nas for home direct play, the shield for outside network play since the shield seems to do, for me at least, a smoother job of transcoding than my nas does.

Hi

Thanks for your time in replying, i’ve reverted back to purely using the NAS at the minute as i cannot go down to smb1, as Windows 10 does not read the Shares. Overall, running Plex on the Shield seemed slower anyway. I might re-visit it when i see another Shield release.

Thanks

FYI, Windows 10 still supports SMB1, but it is disabled by default.

To enable:
Control Panel → Turn Windows features on or off → SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support → SMB 1.0/CIFS Client

Here’s the thread on the Nvidia forum if you want to track things:

Shield Experience Upgrade 7.2.3
Known Issues:
• Plex takes 30 seconds to start a video on SMB V3 NAS. Workaround for now is configure NAS to SMB V1.
