So I am switching from a MacMini MacOS based Plex Server to MacMini Docker based Plex Server so that it will be easier to move everything after the Big Sur update. My question is, is there a way to move all of the metadata info from my movies to the Docker PMS server … ie, like copying a specific file or folder over to the docker PMS config folder? Also, is there any way to transfer my Collections so that I don’t have to recreate them from scratch?
I don’t want to have to do this again which is why I’m switching to Docker.
I suppose you know that updating from one macOS version to a newer one doesn’t require you to re-do your PMS server setup. It’ll just keep working…
As for migrating… migrations between different OS types are possible but can be tricky (e.g. because all your folder structures will change). There’s an official support article on how to move an install within 1 OS family
There’s an alternative approach to only move view state and ratings
The PMS docker page has some notes on how to migrate an existing configuration to a new Docker setup
Thanks! Yes, I know … but I always do a clean install and thought it would be easier to have everything in one location. Plus, I want to set up playlists and use plex amp in place of iTunes … I’ve had it with Apple Music/iTunes.
Unfortunately, I’ve already read those articles and they do not discuss moving to docker. But thanks for the info
UPDATE: I did it! I moved the new Docker → /Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/ folder to the desktop and replaced it with the old folder from MacOS and it totally worked! All of my meta data, collections, even where I last left off in each movie showed right up in the new docker installation. SOOOO happy about this
Oh, I did have to add the new folder paths and delete the old ones.
