Moved servers and lost my data

After following these steps did anyone get this msg. after rebooting?
“This library is currently empty”
All libraries are missing, maybe 10, and the default settings seem not to have changed.

I moved my folder from the default location on C: to I:\Plex\Plex Media Server, then I formatted C: and reinstalled Win10Pro-64bit
When installing Plex Server I pointed to this new location and named the server the same as before.

Also, I had to ‘Claim’ my server through a msg. I rcv. in settings.

Thanks,
SysopChris.

Here are some ERROR entries in the log ‘Plex Media Server.log’
I extracted all the errors from ‘Plex Media Server.1.log’ and uploaded them. The one about the certificate does not sound good. ‘ERROR - CERT: Found a certificate, but couldn’t install it.’

This guide is for moving the data folder on a running system. It does not cover moving your installation to a new machine or how to survive a wiping of the system hard drive.

Are you saying that you installed the software into the same folder? You must not do that.
The data folder and the installation location are separate things.

Which path did you put into the registry? If it was I:\Plex\Plex Media Server\ you did it wrong.
Have you saved the registry branch of Plex from the old Windows installation and re-imported it into the new installation?

Also, if you copied or even moved the original data folder while the server was still running (the Plex icon in the task tray was still visible), then you have copied a damaged version of the primary database. You can try and restore one of the backup copies:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/

  • I assume you did not save your registry branch from the old installation. That’s why you had to re-claim your server into your account.
  • changing the installation location during the Plex server installation does not cause Plex to change the location of its data folder. It does only change the location of its program folder.

Here is what I recommend:

  1. uninstall Plex server (only using Windows’ ‘Apps’ control panel – do not use any type of “uninstaller” or “registry cleaner” software!)
  2. install it again, but this time to the default location on drive C:
  3. if it is running, quit it using the task tray icon
  4. Follow the guide from step 4 on, and change the registry key to I:\Plex\

If you still don’t see your old libraries after that, you’ll have to scrap the main database and reinstate one of its backup copies. https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/

Thanks so much for the reply. I was frustrated enough with this to work in the yard all weekend. No, there were no backups. I knew that ver. of Windows was having trouble so I copied a few folders from it and the next reboot it never came back up so I reinstalled Windows. I mis-spoke, I only copied the database to my I: drive. It was over one million files which was surprising. That one had been going about 3 years. with about 28 TB of media indexed. I had followed the guides, my own knowledge of Plex and anything else I could find about for the last few weeks before seeking help here. The registry entry is correct. I’ve been programmer on the IBM iSeries for the last 25 years and have 41 years of daily PC experience as a hobby and then a profession. That doesn’t help much with Plex but I can follow instructions well enough. It’s hard enough to ask for help when I’m usually the one on the other end guiding user’s through my software.

Regarding your #2, that was the first and last thing I tried and #4, performing those steps is how I came across this post and yielded no results. Any other suggestions?
All the data is still available in the same locations so starting over from scratch is an option but the last one I want to consider.

Thanks.

The order of the steps in my last post above is adapted to your current situation. They are designed to get you out of this without loss of data. So please try them.
