Movie Quality being downgraded from 4K to 720K?!

Im new to plex and also new to the forums, all of my movies are being downgraded to 720P from 4K and 1080P why is this happening?

There’s a number of possible scenarios.
Plex is designed to provide your media to the Plex client in a format that it can play. If your client e.g. cannot play 4K material, Plex will attempt to adjust some of the media characteristics to “get it through” – this can be reducing the resolution, reducing bitrate…

The reason for a transcode can vary:

If there’s a cause to transcode and your CPU isn’t strong enough, this can cause Plex to reduce the quality until it’s able to transcode the file in real-time.

Considering you have a Plex Pass… check if your Plex Media Server has a CPU / graphics card that supports hardware accelerated streaming

im getting an message that it doesnt have a direct connection to my server. but the xbox is hardwired into my local network so i dont understand

The 4K downgrade could be coming from server itself. If you have remote settings to a lower set quality. Check your settings. Also did you try to adjust the video quality manually of the video you was trying to watch in 4k??

the settings are set at maximum and the only options i have are 720p 480p and 240p whne manually

The default remote connection setting is 720p which you can change in quality settings

Looking at the Now Playing on the dashboard will show the IP it is sending the stream to that device to confirm it is a remote connection. it will say local or remote. (likely your external IP). keep in mind that if your xbox is on a different local subnet it will treat it like a remote connection. .

thats what it shows right now and this device is hardwired into my local network

You are using relay connection that means you have internal network problems since your Xbox can’t directly connect to the server.

ok do you have any idea how i fix that?

If it’s an indirect connection that can often mean your server is not reachable outside your network. Try rebooting the the server. This often fixes that issue for me. If this doesn’t solve the issues chances are your firewall or something else is messing with it.

To set the default playback quality under the device you wanna watch, click your username, then settings, then quality. Local should be set to original, and remote to whatever quality you prefer.

To check to see if your server is reachable outside your network. You’ll need to access your server from a web browser. Click on settings (tools icon), then remote access. If it doesn’t say Fully accessible outside your network then try rebooting the server. If that doesn’t fix it you may need port forward it. First check your firewall to make sure it’s not messing with it.

I would also look at your server logs to determine what IP it thinks your Xbox is at and why it thinks it is not on the same local network.
