randomly (i don’t know why) but my recently added movies list is very different than what it was yesterday (and is now completely wrong). how do i find out why it changed and what can i do to fix it. Thanks
so with further investigation… the files it’s showing for recently added are actually the last modified files in my movies folder that it pulls from (not the most recently modified). did i accidentally change something somehow
My problem is not resolved. Why does it think my last modified files are the recently added files?
To even begin investigating, Log files are needed (particularly the deeper scanner logs which I can see in the ZIP file)
If last modified changes, It’s flagged to be rechecked. If, for some reason, the checksum (fingerprint) changes, it will remove the old and immediately add back as a new file (e.g. new version).
Is this what you’re seeing?
This also happens to me.
If i have only 1 version of movie when i change file name plex at the next scan moves movie to recently added, while if i have 2 version and modify 1 file name all is ok.
Think about what’s happening when you change the name.
- The old file (by name) is not there anymore
- It is removed.
- Plex finds a new file (it has no record of this file)
- It analyzes and adds it
- It becomes part of the recently added list
Yes, i think it happens as you said, but i think it souldn’t as movie is not recently added, but just modified or changed of version, i think plex should keep it under consideration.
I can address the issue about file modification time. I can push them to relax that a ‘touched’ file not show as new.
However, if the size is different, it’s a new version. It is “newly added”. Maybe you had an old 720p rip which you replaced with a 1080p rip. That legitimately is “Recently Added”.
Regarding a name change though; The previously established media is gone, the name is gone, the listing in the database is removed. A new name comes in and it’s a new Media Item. No debating there.
Actually i don’t agree, when i change name i have a new file of a certain movie, but not a new movie.
Movie is in library, if i change file reproducing that movie, i think it shouldn’t become recently added movie.
There are four possibilities in play here given the two switches: “Automatically detect” (which is instantaneous from the Linux kernel) and “Empty Trash after each scan”.
Which behavior do you disagree with?
I don’t understand this.
When i file is missing i see my movie with file “not available”. Only when i empty trash movie diappears.
When i rename a file plex should recognise that file as unvailable. And the file with the new name should go in the movie as other version untill i empty my trash.
Isn’t it?
What am i missing?

I disabled “Empty Trash after each scan” and enabled “Automatically detect”

Define ‘modified’ please.
Are you downloading directly into the folder where Plex is looking for media files?
Are you performing postprocessing on these files?
Both should be done outside of a Plex library.
If you are updating the quality or otherwise replace a file with a different version of the same movie/episode, follow the officially recommended method to move media files.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154537-move-media-content-to-a-new-location/
Just with the difference that you don’t actually move a file but add a second file (same movie, but different version and of course slightly different file name).
And even this method only works if you did not change the default ‘metadata agent’ for your library
(between when you added the first version of the item and the second)
I too noticed this behavior recently. I used to be able to change a movie file without it appearing as a recently added movie. Even changing the quality did not trigger the movie to appear as recently added.
TV show episodes do not behave in this manner. If you change the file name on a TV show episodes or even change from 720 to 1080 it does not appear as recently added.
I did not see the movie become recently added when the file is changed in PMS 1.9.7.4460-a39b25852

This is by design. For those cases where the file, for what ever reason is not available. This doesn’t mean YOU deleted it. It could be a permission issue, disconnected drive, etc…
When i rename a file plex should recognise that file as unvailable.
Should but not always. I believe this anomaly could be from Plex detecting a new file BEFORE detecting a missing file. And, if the same agent was used(and PLEX made the same online match) PLEX will see this “new” HASH the same as the old one and reuse the existing metadata effectively replacing the existing entry.
And the file with the new name should go in the movie as other version untill i empty my trash.
Two things can be happening here. PLEX detects a “new” file. PLEX detects a file missing. PLEX will HASH files aswell.
@OttoKerner thanks for the help. So when i look at my movies by “recently added” it is in the order of oldest added to newest added. I know this because when I browse the dir where the movies are and sort them by date modified (oldest to newest) it is the same order than plex displays. It was working and seems to have randomly changed one day. I would like the “recently added” to display the most recently added files and not the oldest ones. I can say that it does seem to be acting normal somewhat again because i have since added a few files and they are on top of the list.

How do i get you the logs?

You did not delete your movie library and re-create it afresh?
Are your media files stored externally or on a network share?
If so, you need to have
Settings - Server - Library - ‘Empty trash automatically after every scan’
DISABLED
Otherwise this is bound to happen again at some time.

- I did not delete and re-create my movie library afresh
- they are stored locally on the computer that is running PMS
- there was a checkmark next to settings-server-library-empty trash automatically after every scan
I have removed that checkmark and saved settings.
Similar problem here. I want to move some media between drives. My TV library is mapped to 2 different locations M:\location1 and O:\Location2. Plex server is on windows 10.
I want to move a tv show from location 1 to location 2.
If I do a “move”, then it appears as a new unwatched show
If I do a “copy” then I have 2 versions of each file, then I delete location 1 and plex keeps the watched status (shows are already watched) but it appears as “recently added” which pushes out the real “recently added”.
How should I move this media? Specially if I want to reorganise my media folders (reorder movies by year for example? or by quality?)
