Every couple of months (sometimes more frequently), some movies lose their Collections tag. Not all, and not always the same movies. I have most collections in their own folder. Are there any settings I should check (or uncheck) to prevent this from happening?
Plex does not retrieve the collection tags from your folder structure. It’s either manually set or derived from TheMovieDb.org (if you have checked that in the library settings).
If you’re using the collection info from TheMovieDb.org – double-check if those movies have somehow been removed from their collections.
Beyond that, Plex should not just lose its information.
Thanks for responding so quickly. I understand the part about folders. I manually entered the Collection tags. But I was just saying that the folders remind me of what’s in the collection. Here is my settings for TMDB:

hmmm… the only other thing I can think of is that Plex might occasionally lose the connection to the underlying media / hard drive.
Do you have Settings > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan checked?
With such a setup what could happen is that Plex scans the library (either triggered manually or automated/periodic), doesn’t find the video file and when emptying the trash actually removes the entry from your library. At some later point the file gets scanned and re-added to the library as a new item – hence without the collection information.
In such a case the “empty shell” of your collection should still be around (even if that particular movie was the only one in that collection) – you could still see it when switching to the collections view of that library.
Good call, but the items are not listed as new. They seem to happen randomly. For example, Raiders of the Lost Ark was added a couple years ago, but just lost the Collection tag “Indiana Jones”. It still shows added previously and not new. The other two films are still in the collection, one added before it and one after. Puzzling.
Jeez the plex guys make it difficult: now I have to fight with the forums in order to make a post to report a bug after fighting the server software.
I just discovered that changing the metadata, e.g. choosing a new poster, but probably other things too - causes it to lose the collection tags. Speaking as a software engineer this seems like a familiar bug to me: writing a new record without fully populating it from existing records.
Latest Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS, manually installed this past weekend from the latest package (i.e. not from the Synology app store).
