When I click on a movie inside a collection and then go back to something else, if I go back to the collection the movie I clicked on has been removed from the collection.
I’ve made four collections and they all do the same, any ideas??

Collections in my experience are very temperamental.
I have found if I make any change to an item in a library (let’s say update a cover) and it’s in a collection, it will drop out.
Collections REALLY need some work.
I agree, such a good idea if they worked properly. In my case all I’m doing is looking at the movie info, not even playing it and it gets removed.
i sometimes have them removed and i haven’t even done anything, i know they are focused on the smart collections (which I don’t like) so the manual ones maybe don’t get the same amount of attention.
Especially the „classic“ / regular collections appear to me to quite solid. The association of items to a collection is based on tags in that item.
The only use case I’m aware of where Plex might drop items is a bad combination of:
In that situation Plex might not find an item during a scan and immediately remove it. If it’s re-added during a subsequent scan, the manually added collection tags (as well as all manual changes to that item‘s metadata) will be missing.
It’s a different thing if you have your library configured to automatically create those classic/regular collections. Plex is collecting that information from The Movie Database where users keep adding all kinds of „collections“ that don’t meet their official definition of collections. Those will regularly be deleted. So a simple metadata refresh can give your collection a complete makeover (independent if this is a manual update or part of the scheduled tasks during server maintenance).
Personally that’s what made me disable automatic collection creation.
But I can create a collection manually and as soon as I click on a movie and go back to the collection, the movie has been removed.
Plex hasn’t done a scan, I’ve not added any metadata myself, I let plex do that, so I’m at a loss but thanks for throwing n the suggestions.
Well I give up now, I just had a look at my collections and without touching them all day 90% of the content has been removed.
Great feature!
Server Logs please!
OK I think I have it all sorted now, I’ll post my solution in case it helps someone else.
The way I was adding movies to collections was marking the movies I wanted and then going to the top clicking on the “Add To” button and selecting my collection.
The other way if it was just a single move, I would click on the three dots on the poster and in the overflow menu click “Add To” and select my collection.
Both methods worked and added the movies to my collections but when I clicked on a movie it would disappear from my collection, If I waited to the next day they would all just disappear by themselves.
My solution is to go to the movie poster, click edit, click the Tags Tab and enter my collection there at the bottom in the collections field.
Hope this helps someone.
Thanks for sharing.
Could you reproduce the (old) behavior using the Add to
context menu and share your server logs once the movie is dropped from the collection?
Sure I can do that tomorrow for you.
Can you also provide exact steps including the names of videos and collections so that we can try to reproduce? I’ve tried using “add to” from different methods and I’m unable to reproduce so there is a step I am missing or it may be a bug related to your specific setup, like a database corruption, which we can look into next if needed.
Sorry for the late reply but here goes.
I’ve done two collections, one called Test and the other called Scream.
Test has the movies “2 Guns” “2:22” and “3 Days to Kill”
Scream has “Scream 1” “Scream 2” “Scream 3” Scream 4"
I added them by going to the movie poster and marking them by the top left hand corner with the dot, I then clicked on the add to menu at the top of the page and clicked on add to collection.
A new box came up and I put the name of the collection at the bottom and clicked on create.
I just clicked on Scream 1 and Scream 2 and they have been removed from the collection, I also clicked on 2:22 which was also removed,
I clicked on the edit icon from the movie poster on “2 Guns” to see if it has the collection was under the tags tab which it wasn’t, the movie was then removed from the collection.
Hope this helps, also attached the logs. Logs.zip (8.0 MB)
I followed these steps and it worked properly for me. The items do not get removed from the collection.
Is the new collection actually created after this? i.e. Do you see the new collection?
Your log says you are running PMS on a Synology NAS. You tagged this thread as server-mac
. Which are you using?
Edit - I see in your log where the Scream collection is created. It does include 4 items.

What setting do you have for the collection visibility for this library? Looks like you have this disabled.
I’ve experienced movie loss from collections twice in the past couple weeks. The most recent one was just a few minutes ago when I updated to 4.63.0.
No changes by me to either the collections or any of the movies within them. All three collections were entirely manual creations/additions, and went from having dozens of movies to a mere handful. Big shame because I had just discovered Collections and was excited to start using them.
Yes I’m running PMS on a Synology, sorry if I’ve posted in the wrong section.
Sorry not sure where to find this.
FWIW - I was able to stop this behavior by locking the Collections Tag field for each movie. Select all your Harry Potter movies, edit tags, make sure the Collection Tag is set (collection name) and lock it (orange padlock). Save changes. Movies should stay in their collections now.
Edit the library, go to the advanced tab, scroll down near the bottom to the “Collections” row.
I’ve changed it to show but the movies still get removed from the collections.
The other collections where I manually added the collection under tags in the edit box are still working fine, they haven’t been affected at all, it is still only when I use the “add to” menu.
I’m happy to keep using the manual method.
What version of Plex Web are you using?
