I have a reoccurring problem with random movies having their collection tags removed.
I’m running PLEX 1.15.5.994-4610c6e8d on a Synology DS918+.
I have my movie collection configured to only display collections. I have about 1,000 movies in 76 different collections.
Some movies are tagged with multiple collections.
At most I have 3 connections hitting the PLEX server at any given time (Roku and PS4 clients).
I have a lifetime PLEX pass.
I have updated the version of PLEX three times over the last several months, and I’ve had this problem with all versions of PLEX I’ve been running so far.
For example, I woke up this morning, hit up my PLEX to find 6 movies were sitting out there without any collection tags. It’s weird that they are displaying when I have my movie collection set to display collections only.
There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to when or why this happens. Sometimes I’ll watch the trailer for a movie and it will remove the collection tags from one or more movies. Sometimes when I add new movies, it will remove the collection tags from one or more movies. Sometimes it happens for seemingly no reason at all.
All my media is properly named and matched. I’m very detail oriented with that. It will randomly take a properly matched movie that has tags for a collection and remove the collection tag, leaving all other matching information (name, year, cover art) in place.
Yes, I click Save after adding a collection tag. All of my movies are in collections and generally stay there, but occasionally they will lose their collection tags and be removed from that collection, even without me touching my files, no adding files, no deleting files, no changing any PLEX tags. I’m a software engineer and this definitely seems like it’s a bug in the PLEX software.
I’ll pay attention for that, and see what I find. I haven’t noticed anything different about movies that lose their collection tags… the cover art and all the other tags stay the same, it’s just the collection tags that get lost.
It happened again this morning. I added some movies to my collections last night, and nothing changed. But this morning I added some new movies, and 7 movies were removed from different collections.
I’m a software engineer, and this really smells like a bug to me. Things that have been in collections for weeks will just randomly have their collection tags removed. I’ve been trying to identify a pattern for this, but so far it seems completely random. Every few days I have to go in and retag a handful of things that have their collection tags removed. It’s become a maintenance task.
Do this: DISable the checkbox
Settings - Server - Library - ‘Empty trash automatically after every scan’
Then keep on monitoring the issue for a while.
Side question: are all your collections created manually, or do you have ‘Use collection info from The Movie Database’ activated in the properties of the Plex Movie agent?
I have a manually created collection for all of my James Bond films. There are 21 films in the collection but randomly films lose the collection tag and so disappear from the the collection.
I have to go in and retag them.
No other metadata is changed or deleted, just the collection tag.
I have also been experiencing this issue. I’ve found that it’s usually one of two things which causes Plex to remove the Collection tag.
Editing the poster causes the tag to be lost, despite not even being on the tags tab.
Plex’s automatic scan/update forces some library items to re-match, despite already being correctly matched. This removes the collection tag.
It only seems to affect some items per collection, not all, and it’s usually the same items over and over again. I’ve tagged ‘Tarzan (1999)’ with ‘Disney’ every day for the past 5 days, saved it, confirmed it’s sitting in the Disney collection, and then opened Plex the next evening to find it untagged and sitting on its own. It was correctly ID’d and matched by Plex on its first import, so I’m not sure what’s triggering the changes.

As soon as this happens again, I’ll look to get this information to you. I haven’t been adding a lot of movies lately, so it hasn’t happened recently. But it has been a consistent problem for me. Enough to consider moving to Emby, although I have invested a lot into Plex at this point, and love it otherwise.
I got this problem too, I has over 1000 contents and every of them has collection tags, and this bug is really messing up my library. I tried uncheck all refresh metadata features, not sure it will stop or not.
It’s possible this has been fixed in the many releases I’ve updated my Plex server since this was happening. It used to happen several times a week, but it hasn’t happened in weeks for me. So hoping whatever bug it was, got fixed at some point.
