Moving from a Synology NAS (DSM7) to a Qnap Nas

Server Version#:1.24.114931-7000
Player Version#:

I upgraded to DSM7 on my DS920+ and didn’t realize the changes that were made would make copying the plex system easily to another platform. Since rebuilding my entire library, I have decided to move to a QNAP NAS. Is there anyway in which I can move from synology to qnap without having to rebuild my entire library again?

Moving from Syno to QNAP is pretty straight forward.

Syno

  1. Turn off all the checkboxes in Settings - Server - Library – SAVE those changes
  2. Shutdown PMS
  3. FileStation → PlexMediaServer → AppData → Plex Media Server
  4. Highlight everything,
  5. Right-click → Compress to Plex Media Server.zip
  • This will take a long time
  1. When complete, Download the file

QNAP

  1. Create shared folder PlexData (exact capitalization required)

  2. Install Plex on the QNAP

  3. Let it start once then Stop Plex

  4. File Station → Plex Data → Click into “Plex Media Server”

  5. Highlight everything you see there → Delete it

  6. Upload the ZIP file

  7. UNZIP HERE the zip file.

  8. As confirmation it’s correct, you’ll see “Preferences.xml” again when it’s done and all the other subdirectories.

  9. Start Plex

  10. Let it start up and get established

  11. You should now be able to open the server by direct IP (http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web)

  12. For each section containing media

  • ADD the new location(s) – Do not delete the old yet
  • SAVE the change
  • Let PMS scan and find the media
  • After all is found,
  • EDIT the section again
  • REMOVE the old location(s)
  • SAVE
  • Let it scan again (to completion)
  • Empty trash
  • Clean Bundles
  • Optimize database
  • Advance to the next section

Thank you so much for your help. I’m excited to get started this weekend.

First off, let me thank you for these instructions, they were extremely helpful and made what I thought would be a difficult process quite easy. However, I have run into one bump in the road. In both of my movie libraries in Plex I have a number of collections that I made. However, one of the libraries, the largest one, did not migrate the collections over to the new install. The other library worked just fine, but my main one did not. When I click on collections under that library, it just reshows the library itself, not the collections. So, what can I do? Is it possible to get just my collections for that library back or would I have to reinstall completely from scratch? Is a reinstall even possible now? I really would like a solution to get the collections back for that one library. Thank you for your help.

I’m not 100% certain so have asked for some help .

Okay, so when I got home I checked the client and the collections showed up just fine. The Web client is not working well. After all the updating is finished, I will close it and restart again to see if that clears it up on the web client.

The collections info is in the database, so if you moves that over correctly, it should have just worked. However, when you were changing changing the media paths (step 12 above), it’s possible things didn’t get matched properly so the old collection information for those movies got lost. The collection itself should still exist, they just might be empty.

What client is that?

One of the clients I use to view is my Nvidia Shield Pro, which showed the collections just fine. The web client is still not, however.

I tried another client, the android app on my phone , and the collections showed up just fine.

Huh, that’s odd. Are you using the bundles Web client (came with PMS) or the hosted one from plex.tv?

So, I downloaded the app for my QNAP from Plex and installed that one. To get to the web client I just click on open in the QNAP and a page opens up with my plex library.

Also, let me tell you this. When I did step 12 above for the QNAP I accidently did all the libraries before I did steps “Empty Trash, Clean Bundles, and Optimize Database.” I was supposed to do each library completely one at time, per instructions. Would that have missed up on the set of collections, but left the other one intact?

That should be fine.

If it is only Web that isn’t presenting the collections info, then your move sounds like it worked. Something in Web just isn’t working right.

To get to the web client I just click on open in the QNAP

That is the bundled version. Try using the hosted one. Go to plex.tv, sign into your Plex account, hit the launch button at the top right or just go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/. See if that’s any different.

You can also edit one of your movies, go to the tags page, scroll down to the bottom to the collections field. Is the name of the collection you expect listed there?

Okay tried these ideas. The web client is still not showing the collections, however, when I tried to add a movie to a collection, all the collection were listed. They just don’t appear under the collections tab.
