Moving Metadata on Windows

  1. type in the new location
Beware! The path you type in must not include ‘Plex Media Server’ as last part.

So if now your plex data reside in G:\plexdata\Plex Media Server\ you type in only
G:\plexdata
into the input field. (Keep in mind that G: must use the NTFS file system, not ReFS which gets used with Windows Storage Spaces. It must also not be a networked drive. exFat is also not a viable option.)

Thank you so much. I had the Plex Media Server part in there trying my best to figure out why it wanted to completely rebuild my library from nothing.

Thank you for the info but it doesn’t work.

  1. There is no ‘Server’ option in settings
  2. Even deleting the Plex Server library on my Sys Disk (which you can not fully do) has no effect as the starting of Plex just regenerates the library…
Fortunately as I had not allocated any of my media files the above did not take very long.I notice this work-round is from 2015 so I reckon things have changed.

Yes, but there is a kind of ‘heading’ with the name of your server

What makes you think so? Of course you can fully delete it.

Plex%20fail - this is result of deleting Plex Server and, yes,I have full Admin privileges and changed file from Read only but it won’t go.
However,I noticed the Plex entry in my tray had an option ticked to start Server on start-up.I have deselected that and now there is an option to allocate where Server library goes.I’ve got to go out now but will try loading new location later.

The tray icon shouldn’t be there at all while you are deleting files in the plex data folder. Because as long as the icon is there, the server is still running and has a ‘lock’ on some files.

  1. The server was not running (or Plex)but, even making the log file ‘not hidden’,the System still would not allow it to be deleted.
  2. Stopping the server starting on Plex load has now allowed me to re-position it to another HDD and libraries are now populating.

Thanks for you help.

So glad you mentioned NTFS file system before I spent hours using Refs!

Worked like a charm, Thank you!!

Hi all,

My Win 10 Plex Server crashed. Most likely a mother board issue, and my winload.efa got corrupted. To avoid a long downtime on my Plex Server I got my self a new server with Win 10 Pro.

I mounted the old hard drive as secondary disk in the new server. I watched some Youtube videos on how to move Plex to another server. After going through the steps I can not see that it picking up my old libraries.

What I did:

  1. Installed Win 10 Pro:
The username that I created was not the same as on the old server. Not sure if the will give problems when it comes to access rights, ownership etc…

  2. Fetch the old Plex info in the old registry file on the old disk:
Started regedit as admin. File/load hive. Browsed to disk#2:\users<old_name>\NTUSER.DAT and confirmed. Gave it a name “_old_plex”. Now I see the plex registry entries under my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_old_plex\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server.

I right click on the “Plex Media Server” in the left window and choose export. I save it “Plex Media Server.reg” on my desktop.

Trying to merge it with my new windows registry fails with “Cannot read the registry”. A closer look by editing the reg file on my desktop shows me that it is using a user that is not known in my new system. So I change the 2 lines that have HKEY_USERS_old_plex\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server.

Now the merge is working without a problem.

  1. Zip the old Plex data:
On the old disk#2 I browse to disk2:\users<old-name>\appdata\local. Here I see the folder Plex Media Server. I zipped that entire folder and stored it on my desktop.

  2. Download and installed Plex on my new server disk#1:
After install, I did not launch the app. I unzipped the Plex Media Server file (from my desktop) to disk1:\users<new-name>\appdata\local. Now I have disk1:\users<new-name>\appdata\local\plex media server.

  3. Reboot server:
    to activate the registry changes

  4. launch Plex Media Server:
It knew my username and logged in without any authentication. That gave me the impression that the info in the reg file was read. But the libraries are not there. It does see another test Plex server on my network. Exit Plex.

  5. start looking for possible mistakes I can have made:
Something I noticed is that the new Plex install did not create the typical “Plex Media Server” folder under C:\users<new-user>\appdata\local. It did however create a Plex folder. In the plex folder I see cache, logs, Plex Media Server and QtWebEngine. I did not have that on my old disk#2.

Also the registry file has something odd. Besides the Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server and Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\WinSparkle folders under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, it also shows a folder “plex.tv”. I did not have that on my old registry.

When I start my new Plex Server, settings, I see the test server is listed. But the new server is not “created”. I was expecting that I get my old main screen from the AMD-A10 server, but it doesn’t. Under More I only see the test server (located on another machine in the local network).

The fact that I see local appdata folders and registry entries that are not mentioned in the Plex youtube videos, does this mean that the latest updated Plex installer has a different setup? And that this is causing my issues? Or am I missing something.

Did I copied/restored my old data to the correct places?

Looking forward to your comments.

Most likely the primary database file was corrupt.
Fall back to one of the backup copies.

Do also make sure that your media storage is accessible under the same drive letters/path names/network share names
as on the old server.

To all. I can confirm that the above procedure (my previous post) actually works flawlessly. The only thing I did wrong is when I visited plex.tv, I followed the download link on the main page. This will download and install the Plex app. This is (of course) NOT the Media Server. That download link I found in the footer of the web page.

I downloaded and installed the media server, launched it, and TATAAA… my old server is back on line, with all my personalized comments and media descriptions.

@OttoKerner : a repair as described on the page you referred to cleaned up to missing lines. Never hurts to clean up now and then  . Thank you for your input.

I moved all my data to another drive in the past and it worked perfectly. Now, I reinstall windows to not be able to find the setting “The path where local application data is stored” (see snip)

Please help.

It was intentionally removed, for security reasons. See [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows

I am closing this thread, because the instructions above are outdated.
New procedure is laid out here: [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows
