Moving part of the library on Synology DSM7

Server Version#: 1.27.0.5897

Hello,
To gain some space on my NAS I would like to move some of my movies to another “folder”. This folder is in fact a shared folder on another NAS which is connected to the first NAS via CIFS distant connection.
In Plex, my movie library is configured to look at the original folder and the new one. Everything works fine (except everything is doubled for now, I’ve not empty the original folder intentionaly).

The problem is with metadata : each movie I’ve personalized (name, cover, …) is getting back to their original state (the one in the new folder, the original is fine).

Is there a way to say to metadata “hey, all the movie library has moved here, update yourself please!”

Thanks for your help !

When you add a second (which will be a duplicate) folder location,
-AND-
Copy the same media there,

When PMS is done scanning that new folder,
Examining the “Get Info” for each item will show you it has two paths.

This is how you confirm PMS has two locations, with same metadata, for the same item.

Now, as you want, you can safely remove the first folder reference from the list.
PMS will update again and remove it.
It will still keep the 2nd (which now becomes the master) location.

Thank you @ChuckPa for your help.

Sadly after Plex has scanned the new folder it has duplicate entries… The one with the metadata and the new naked…

I will try force a scan refresh tonight. Fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

After scanning the new folder, which has the SAME content,

YES, it will have it as a duplicate.

The difference here is that PMS WILL SHARE THE SAME METADATA AND HISTORY

After all the media has been identified as duplicated.

  1. EDIT the library section again
  2. Folders tab
  3. DELETE the old folder
  4. SAVE and EXIT

PMS will scan and then remove the old, no-longer-valid, locations.

I’m not sure to understand what you’re saying because Plex doesn’t seem to find that movies are the same.
I can guarantee that “movie” folder is an exact copy.

Here is my library configuration :

And a picture of the “problem” :

It seems that for “2 Guns” it finds all the info by itself but not for “4x4”. As you can imagine, the good 4x4 is in my old folder and the bad one is the fresh copy.

I’m quite scared of “delete” the old folder in the library configuration because if I lost all my metadata it would be a lot of job…

EDIT :
I’ve force a re-scan and a metadata refresh and I’ve partially what you were saying. But I’m not sure it’s a good result as some of the movies are always “duplicate”

This is exactly what you expect when you are moving your movies to a new location

You want PMS to see them in the new location AND the old location during this first step.

AFTER it has found all the movies you copied and lists them as duplicate, now you can remove the old location.

Is “/volume1/video/video_back/movie” the new location?
Is “/volume1/video/movie” the old location?

This article is a little bit outdated but the procedure is the same.

Thank for the article linked.
I already have problems because it PARTIALLY works. Some of movies (the majority) are listed as duplicate like 2 Guns.
But some (about 40-50) are “real” duplicate like “4x4” and “4x4 2019” which is the same file in the 2 folders…
I’ll try to delete the old folder in library configuration and we will see ^^ For 50 films I could do it manually

If you physically have duplicated media but with different names, it will be up to you to resolve which to keep.

If you are uncertain, more information is needed. I will need to see exactly what you see so I can advise

Remember, Plex indexes what you have. It will not manage the files for you.

Some movies, such as those having mostly numbers in their name (ex: 9) can be difficult for Plex to match.

Try performing a fix match on the “bad” 4x4. If Plex has trouble finding the match, search with the IMDB ID instead of the name.

You can also rename the file in the new location to include the IMDB or TMDB ID. This tells Plex exactly which movie to match.

.../4x4 (2019) {imdb-tt8561690}/4x4 (2019) {imdb-tt8561690}.ext

  • Put the year in parenthesis and the IMDB/TMDB ID in curly braces.
  • The library must be using the Plex Movie scanner & agent.
