Trying to expand HDD on Synology NAS. Followed the steps, per PLEX (stop trash, move files, etc).
But, when enabling Plex again,
“Recently Added” is all messed up - it shows up in the order most recent files were copied over, I’m guessing/what it looks like.
Also, some of the movies register as duplicates, but some of them don’t. Some show as both the new and the old locations … separately.
With Synology, each drive is named as a VOLUME and plex recognizes that, so I haven’t figured out how to change the volume so that plex doesn’t know the media location has changed. And just stays the same. Any help appreciated.
I’ve somewhat rewritten the procedure.
While written for general Linux, it applies to DSM (DSM is built on Linux)
Good LUCK! PLEX does not work well when moving media around!
I can move any of my libraries (some of which are multi-terabytes) from machine to machine without any lost / mislabeled / incorrect content.
The key is to make the move WITHOUT LOSING the database records
I will help here with a real-world write up if it benefits anyone
That’s what I’m trying to do, essentially.
But just moving libraries to a new location Without Losing data records.
Think I Got It!!
Moved (2) items and it appears I’m getting results expected.
- Disabled all the “auto” stuff in library settings (except allow deletion)
- Then, Just physically moved the media - NOT COPY
- Went back and added the new library. Plex started scan automatically, and found new media. Some of the poster art is different on some files, but nothing major.
As I added more files to new location, had to Re-Scan for Plex to locate. No duplicates and Recently Added hasn’t changed!!!
Alot easier than expected.
You know that’s not what Chuck was talking about, lol. But hey, you’re all set, I guess.
My procedure has always been:
- Make sure any ‘auto’ processing is off
- COPY the media from one ‘library’ ‘folder’ to a new location.
- ADD the new folder location to the ‘library’
- SCAN library files (media will show a (2) the upper corner to show an additional copy of each media
- REMOVE the old 'folder from the ‘library’
- DELETE the original files.
Since all the media remain present the entire time there is no impact on watched/in-progress/etc.
Just an FYI that the number is no longer displayed. That went away quite some time ago.
Instead, you can sort the library for duplicates. You can also use an advanced filter to sort for items that are not duplicates.
Hmmm. I guess I never noticed that change, but you are right. It doesn’t do that anymore.
Also forgot step 7. SCAN library again.
Yea. I read his instructions couple to try interpret what’s actually happening. Kicker was the MOVING the files instead of Copying - which got me on the right track. IDK why, but it just didn’t play right when copying. Good to go know though.
