Moving Plex library from external HDD to Qnap NAS

Hi all,

I have a question that i would be very appreciative if someone could guide me with advice/help.
I have been using a Netgear Nighthawk router with built in Plex Server and an external HHD as storage for my library for a long time, i have recently bought a Qnap TVS-672XT nas for better storage and backup capabilities for all in the household.

I have set up the nas and installed Plex from the App Center but really cannot get an answer as to how i move the library from the external HHD to the nas directly as there are three USB ports on the nas, i figure it will be quicker to do a direct transfer than it would be to do it over the network.

I am brand new to the world of nas’s and am finding getting an answer frustrating.
I want to move all of the folders and metadata on the external HDD to the nas drive that i created a folder in in File Station and direct Plex to see it and hoping i do not have to go through the entire library again fixing matches and changing posters.

I am using a mac to configure Qnap and Plex if that makes any difference, i can use a windows laptop if need be.
I have updated Plex for the most recent update on the nas.

Does anyone have any advice or help please?
Kind regards

Through the web interface for the NAS, you will first need to make sure the external HDD is mounted on the NAS. I think Storage & Snapshots will show this. If it’s not, you’ll need to resolve that issue first. Once it’s there, the drive should show up in File Station. In File Station, simply move the files to the location you want on the NAS.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply, upon connecting the external HDD to the front USB on the NAS, it does show up under EXTERNAL STORAGE, but does not show in File Station, i have tried refreshing and still doesn’t show, is there anything i can do to remedy this?
The external HDD is a powered 3.5" if that is relevant.

Kind regards

Make sure you have admin rights to the usb drive folder. You can check rights in Control Panel > Users or in Control Panel > Shared Folders. You could also just add a standard user to that folder. Either way, they’ll need permissions to it.

Brilliant! it’s showing up, if i simply copy everything from this drive which is solely my Plex library, is there anything i should do to retain the metadata for the library and save myself the time to redo all of the alterations to mstches, posters etc?

Kind regards

I don’t know about that. Wherever the Plex database is held should have the information. If you moved the file locations, I think the DB should be able to quickly update the new location when doing a scan and shouldn’t need to redownload the metadata or change what is there, but I don’t know for sure. You’ll need to point the Plex server to the new location.

All of the Plex files including metadata should be on the same HDD as i had it connected to a router with Plex server built in.
When opening Plex and going in to settings, where would i look to add the new location for the library?
Or is it a case of going through the Add Library/Movies/TV Shows etc again?

Kind regards

To add file locations, Settings > Manage > Libraries > Movies [etc] > Edit Library > Add folders.

In the QNAP NAS, these will show up as ZFS[XX]_DATA/[path]. XX is the number assigned by the NAS. You’ll need to figure out where they are. I think I did this by ssh’ing into the NAS and looking inside the folders. You’ll need to know how to navigate linux through cli to do that.

Thank you so much, your help has been very much appreciated.
