Added new HD in my Win10 desktop’s second drive bay. I wanted to ask the plex community for best practices / guidance on how to move plex media files over to new drive without losing playlists or scrapped or custom metadata. My SYSTEM (C:) remains unchanged and has all the PLEX Metadata . I have read many posts on this common question; however still confused on whether this is moving to a new location (I am keeping paths same, just drive letter is changing) or upgrading the hard drive.
I have a Windows 10 desktop that has two internal 3.5 hard drive bays. The original existing drive is F:, where all of my plex media libraries reside under F:/Video Library/. I now wish to move this folder to the new drive D:/Video Library/ which would be the new drive I just added. I have other programs pointing to F: drive so I cannot go into Windows 10 and simply change the drive letter of D: to F:
I dont wish to loose my playlists of about 50 titles that I had to enter custom meta data for.
I see below plex support links, but unsure which steps to follow. Do I follow “Moving Content to a New Location” because the drive letters are changing? I plan to simply copy F:/Video Library/ to D:/Video Library/; however its unclear what I do after copying the folders over. Apologies for this new user question. Thanks in advance for any comments. Apologize for the new user question. I am confused by the below two posts.
That worked perfectly. Thank you for the helpful instructions. Much appreciated. The only item I would expand upon for others who maybe new users like me would under #5. (Click on the 3 dots under your library > Manage Library > Edit > Add folders…). Thank you again and great job!
Now have an issue. Ran out of disk space. How do I now move the movie and tv folder contents of my computer to a Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation DS1621+ without losing all of my Playlists and tags created for Collections? I just purchased the Synology. Thanks
I followed the above steps exactly however all of my Playlists and Collections are gone. Also all of the meta data for titles that did not match correct are gone. I did not see any old paths for “Add Folders tab and add the new file path for your library. Keep the old path’s for now”. I am moving from a Windows 10 machine to a Synology DS1621+. The media file path on the Windows 10 Box is D:\Video Library\Movies\Movies To Watch and the media files on the Synology /Video Library/Movies/Movies To Watch. I followed all of the copying and the correction file deletion for Plex Media Server. One item I could not follow was “/Video Library/Movies/Movies To Watch” however I was able to use the “Alternative for Synology, open File Station…” So where I am now is that I have two Plex Servers: 1) DESKTOP-PC and 2) NAS.
May I ask for any suggestions on how to move over my Playlists and Collections from 1) DESKTOP-PC to 2) NAS? I probably have over 200 items in both so I really dont want to loose all of that work and have to attempt to redo. Thank you for your any suggestions.
Thank you for the fast response. I went back and ran step 7, however libraries and playlists still missing. I see my entire library with no Collections and Playlists on the NAS. What steps should I re-run to migrate the Playlists and Collections? Should I delete NAS and restart from step #4? Thank you again for your help. I am appreciative.
Understood. One question. For Step #3, copying all of the media; this step files took 18 hours. How can I salvage all of the media files now residing on the NAS? Can I move those files into another folder on the NAS? I don’t wish to delete the media files from the NAS and have to recopy from the PC to the NAS. May I ask for what steps to salve the media file copy step and insure the media files will not be picked up Plex on the NAS? Thank you
Ok thank you for clarifying. I apologize, when you said start from scratch, I was not sure if that applied to step 3 as well. Sorry, I apologize. Additionally, just reconfirming, I don’t need to remove Plex app from the NAS and reinstall? Lastly, how do I carry out this step “For Synology, file permissions = 644, folder permissions = 755. Owner = plex. Group = users.”
I followed your helpful instructions exactly. However at step “6. Restart Plex on the New machine.” after I run Plex from Package Center I gat an error message dialogue box stating “Failer to run the package service.” I am using Plex installed version 1.18.5.2309-f5213a238 on DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2 on a Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation DS1621+…
Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot? Should I just re-try the steps again?
Thank you for the fast response. Attached please find the Logs.zip file. Again, appreciate your help with my issue. It is this great support to why I am Plex Pass member and purchased six Gift a Plex Pass subscriptions to give friends & family this holiday season.(File removed)
Thank you Trumpy81 for the links of how to troubleshot/repair a corrupt database. I followed the links and by re-copying the database file
com.plexapp.plugins.library.db from Windows 10 to the Synology NAS, I was able to continue with all of the steps with the migration successfully. Please see attached log.
A few follow-up questions: 1) Can Plex handle running to two Plex Servers on the same network? Ie if I have Plex Media Server running on my Windows 10 box and Plex Media Server running on my Synology NAS at the same time; will that cause any issues or problems? 2) Now that the migration to the NAS is complete, is it ok to now update the Plex on my NAS? I am getting the message “A Plex Media Server update is available for the server NAS 1.21.3830” 3) I have attached my most recent log files, can you please confirm that the logs now look correct?
Again thank you for all of your help with my migration and then dealing with the corrupted database. Appreciate all of your patience with my questions and helpful solutions. Again, support like yours is why I gift Plex Pass to my friends and family.
