Moving server from newer to older hardware

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112-
Player Version#: Nvidia Shield or Apple TV

I recently came into a very old computer that is still working really well. It’s a Intel i5 2600K Sandybridge. Definitely NOT the newest hardware around. It’s has 8 GB of ram and a old video card that is just there. Right now my PMS is installed on a Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 980 TI. However this PC is my gaming / editing / coding PC. I was thinking of moving my server to the older i5 and using it as a dedicated PMS and Media Storage device. I’ve tested PMS on the i5 and so far the server performs pretty well. Now all my use is local. NO remote stream or sharing of contact etc. Would this be a good move for my usage?

This would be either an i5 2500K or an i7 2600K
An i5 2600K CPU doesn’t exist.

Which one is it?

Look it up at PassMark - Intel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz - Price performance comparison

then compare it with your current gaming CPU PassMark - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - Price performance comparison

And do also peruse https://support.plex.tv/articles/201774043-what-kind-of-cpu-do-i-need-for-my-server/

:+1:t2: do it. Plex itself doesn’t need much.

On an E7500 w/ 4GB I can do a 720p remote transcode or two. At least 6-7 direct-played 1080P sessions, probably more. Or a couple of direct 4K streams.

The Shield and Apple TV 4K (in particular) are good players. You can avoid server transcoding without much difficulty.

A potential monkey-wrench would be “advanced” subtitles - particularly if you watch anime. I use “normal” subtitles constantly and don’t have trouble, but “advanced” subtitles (SSA/ASS) are hard to display correctly without transcoding.

Otherwise, go for it.
