New Media Server Build - Hardware Suggestions

How do all, I am looking at putting together a new media server to amalgamate my PMS and file server (both running windows 10 pro) which I split recently because the file server couldnt handle transcodes and with the recent covid-19 fiasco a few friends asked for access to my PLEX to while away the hours during lockdown.

I currently only have x264 1080p video, no plans to allow 4k transcoding (that will remain in house direct play).

Currently | have:

PMS = i7-6700HQ (6,497 passmark)
Running Plex, Roon Core

File Server = AMD A6-6400K APU (1,363 passmark)
Running Sonarr/Radarr/Jacket/uTorrent

I’d like to bring them together in a single server with the ability to allow around 5 concurrent transcodes of 4-8mpbs (so I dont cap my upload bandwidth). I was looking at getting a Intel i3-9100F and a p2000 quadro to do this using HW transcoding, I assume this will be sufficient?

Also, for Plex remote access, how does that work if I am running a VPN on the server, is there a way to seperate it out so the PMS external traffic does not use the VPN, if not that kind of scuppers the whole idea before I start!

Thanks

Probably no need for the p2000 as the intel Cpus do a decent job with quick sync hw transcoding.

VPNs can be circumvented, but depending on the chosen OS this could be more or less work to do.

Thanks, with the P2000 I was hoping to kind of future proof the system to some extent?

On the VPN side Ive done a bit of searching and it appears that Virtualbox is my friend here!

There are several options I guess for the VPN problem.

I would simply start with the i3 and see how far it takes you. You can buy a gpu afterwards anytime.

Just a reminder that the F processors do not have Quick Sync Graphics.

If you forgo the GPU card you’ll want a non-F processor.

Intel UHD 630 graphics support decoding of H.265 10-bit video. See Table 2-15 in datasheet volume 1.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/processors/core/8th-gen-core-family-datasheet-vol-1.html

Interesting to know, so worth getting the non F version to start and then if needed stick in the P2000 for extra power.

My only other concern was if I go the VM route I’ll be stealing resource from the i3… memory isn’t an issue as I can just pick bigger size but not sure how much my transcode capacity will be hit by running a VM to house the download stuff…

The UHD 630 in the recent intels does a better job at 4K transcoding than the P2000. I suspect it is better with 1080p as well but I dont know that for sure. Id skip the quadro

Oh wow, I didn’t realise that, sounds superb and a good starting position!

For futureproofing, i would get something beefier than an i3. While its GPU is awesome, the chip it self will struggle if you throw to many 7.1 audiotranscodes at it or subtitles that need transcoding at the same time. I would get an i7 to be honest

Hi, if anyone is still monitoring this I had a question about purchasing a used PC to be used for plex.

I’m interested in being able to handle transcoding for no more than 4-5 1080p streams. I also want to be able to rip bluerays with MakeMkv.

I had the idea of adding a quadro p 2000 to my existing HP Pavilion - AMD fx-6100 (passmark 3,650). Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be compatible with the new card. I’ve had the HP for 5 year, so maybe something new is in order.

I’m retiring and want to watch my budget, so I thought about a used PC.

The link is for a machine with an i7-4770. I’d like to be able to add the p 2000 as well - thinking the I7 and the p 2000 should cover my needs and much more.

Here’s a link for that machine:

Any thoughts. Given my experience I’m really concerned the video card may not be compatible with this if any one knows or knows how to check, I’d appreciate being clued in.

I moved from a lenovo TS140 with a xeon version of the 4770, to a system with an i3-8100 and the improvement for HEVC was massive.

if you are piecing together something for plex, forget the nvidia options, start with an intel CPU, gen 7 or newer, w builtin GPU, and you will have an inexpensive quality server.

Thanks for your input.

Well I already have the p2000, though I think I may be able to return it.

I just wondered would it make a good thing even better, or would there be no incremental improvement?

So having a quick look, whilst appreciating its 3 times the cost of the i3 would the i7 9700 be a decent option, still has the UHD 630 aswell…

I would at least consider it. If all your content is basic ac3 and you dont use subs, the i3 should be plenty though

I have a nvidia card on the shelf I could pop in but so far zero reason to do so. IHD630 is just that good. Besides if you want to pony up for add on card current gen nvidia has better quality than p2000. Turin came with a better media chip and if you are the type that really needs the very very best, well the p2000 is no longer it.

With quick sync video plex won’t need those cores but why the heck not. It’s only money

Did you mean i3-8100, i7-8100.

These Intel designations are confusing.

I3-8100 is more than fine for plex

Quick one, I wondered what I could push the laptop (i7-6700HQ with an Intel 530 and Nvidia GTX 970M) to and I got 6 transcodes @ 8mbps (x264) going (all marked as hw which confused me):

CPU went 100% for a while when the 6th transcode started but then calmed down.

Is this expected with this hardware, is it effectively sharing the hw transcoding across the 2 GPUs in the laptop?

Thanks

Plex defaults to GPU0 which is the Intel HD Graphics in this case.

You can see from your screenshots that you are closer to being CPU limited vs GPU limited, it might help you to understand that the audio being transcoded is the cause of the video transcoding in order to keep it all in sync. Unless this was a load test I would point out that there is a windows client (Plex for Mac/Windows) that not ask for stereo like the browser.
