Right there, your post word for word, is why I went out and bought a used mid-2010 Mac Mini, and why my PS3 Fat-60 is now gathering dust in the study connected to nothing. Throw in Cinavia that Sony decided to infect their own video gear with (PS3 included), and that they removed the ability to dual boot the PS3 into Linux, and I can't think of a single solitary reason to use one of those things for anything other than playing games. Using it as a media hub is just a lesson in frustration and futility... Good luck. You'll need it. :(
Oh great!
It is used as a game player but as a media device it would work so well!
I have a 2007 Mac Mini but with no HDMI output i cant output audio and video over the same cable to my Amplifier and therefore cant use it for the plex client which is a royal pain in the ■■■■!
Short of buying a new mac which is not an option .. the PS3 seemed my only hope!!

Well, if the PS3 says unsupported then the transcoding isn't kicking in I would guess. And if it doesn't kick in then I can only think of two possible reasons.
1. Your PMS server is not supporting real-time transcoding (how powerful is your machine that has PMS on it? And which OS is on that one?)
2. The PS3 DLNA profile for Plex is not correct. If I can find some time I will try with my MP4 files. Which PMS version do you use?
PS3 can play MP4 video files with extension of .mp4 with video codec of MPEG-4 AVC H.264 /Xvid/DivX and audio codec of AAC. There are still some other MP4 video files are unsupported like MPEG-4 ASP.
As MPEG-4 AVC H.264 codec, support is limited to the following specifications:

Ive been having this and multiple issues on my ps3. I think one of the ps3 updates messed with media server settings and now everything takes FOREVER to load, doesnt show in folders, unsupported, or gets 3/4 through then cuts and I cant get back to the place forcing me to use th actual PC to watch.
I started using ps3 media server for JUST my ps3 because it does work better "now" but man I do love plex. I love how it works with everything else but my ps3 has just started wigging out a couple months ago and its unbearable.
Plays, netflix, hulu, ETC fine.
used to play my mkv, most mp4, avi etc great but now not so.
I want to see if there is a way to stop my plex braodcasting to my ps3 for now so it wont show in the list.
If you turn of the Plex DLNA server, the PS3 will not see it; of course if you have any other DLNA players they also will not it.
