MPAA and Plex

First let me say I’m not a power user of Plex by any means, and it’s possible I may have a setting wrong or something I need to change, but…

I have a windows PC in my master closet with contents on it. I have Plex Pass, and as far as I know my library is only accessible on devices when people are logged-in with my Plex pass username and password. That basically means only myself and my two kids (neither of which are old enough to know anything about file sharing or the like) should have access.

Today I got an email from my ISP (AT&T U-Verse) saying they got an MPAA copyright infringement notice. At first I thought it was a phishing email, but the particular item in question is one of the titles in my library. So the question is, Can the MPAA see the titles in my private library? Also, since I’m not sharing anything with anyone, this stuff is just for my personal use and was obtained legally, am I doing anything wrong?

If my library can only be accessed by people with my username and password, how did the MPAA see this item? What can I do to ensure they can’t see my library and it’s only available on my closed network? Thanks!

Which channels did you install? Was the ‘BitTorrent’ channel among them?

I don’t have any channels installed. All I have running is the Plex server itself, I created three folders and each folder has content in it, and that’s it. One folder for myself one folder each for the two kids. The content that is in there is content that I just dragged and dropped.

I don’t know what that implies.

As long as you have ‘Secure Connections’ set to required, no one would be able to sniff your Plex traffic and determine that way what you have on your system.
So I guess they have used some other means to snoop on you or maybe they just state they have something.

Disable ‘remote access’ at Settings - Server - Remote Access

Ok, so first thing’s first: Plex does not automatically download content to your library, it simply streams the content you already have. You have to add your own content to it, but how you do so is up to you. It sounds like you chose a method which is generally not condoned or legal (probably BitTorrent). That is probably where you got flagged by the MPAA. Warnings can be received between immediately via email or months via snail mail. I would advise finding safe, legal ways to get content. However, discussing such topics is strictly against forum rules.

Happy streaming!
