for example i have alot of Home Movies / Videos that i do not want anyone to see is it possible to hide/ pw protect them? same thing with adult movies? wife and myself have alot of home made videos that we do not want to share with anyone ( no not nude at all ) and we have some that we would like anyone to see.
The way MediaBrowser achieves this is twofold: content above a certain rating can be blocked, and whole folders (I guess akin to libraries in Plex) can be blocked.
The library, and all content, can be unlocked with a simple 4 digit passcode, which then gives access to everything.
There are options to hide content completely that is not available due to restrictions, meaning the libraries would not even appear if the session has not been unlocked… For example, at the “Section” of PMS level a rating could be added?
IIRC the Plex team has specifically commented even prior to Plex 9 release that this is a feature they very much intend to support, though I haven’t seen any comments on how they plan to support this. Also, the Klexi iOS client does offer such a feature already based on pin code and restricting access according to Ratings, suggesting the capability is there so maybe we could see this soon?
So - bump - I would certainly like to understand when we might see this feature in Plex, as for me this is the one key missing function.
I’d like to bring this topic back up the list and to the attention of the Plex team. I myself have two young kids, one of which is 8 yrs old and I feel I cannot let him have access to our media server because of this issue, even though he’s more than capable of opreating it.
Please let us know when this feature will be introduced.
+1 for some sort of controls. My kids are grown and gone, but grandkids come over and for the time being only my wife and myself know about Plex on the Roku. Once I can keep prying eyes from one section on there, we’ll be good.
+1, however, I wouldn’t want this based purely on ratings. I have friends come over to watch movies shown through Plex and I’d rather them NOT have full access regardless of their age. It’s the idea that certain things are personal and other things aren’t. Some home movies (not sexual) are just not something you show to everyone. They’re personal moments. I think the idea of using ratings is great, but the ability to simply lock down different sections (each with potentially different pass codes) allows more flexibility. I can then share family moments with the family, my adult friends can watch anything else they want, and the kids won’t be able to watch anything undesirable.
Also, some cautious parents I know seriously screen what their children watch regardless of rating. For them, they probably just want to mark an individual file’s permissions. You certainly wouldn’t want to have to copy/move files around to ‘children friendly’ sections – especially if not all of the episodes of a show pass your test. That makes it awkward for the parent to watch the show (if you move it, it’s under two sections; if you copy it, it’s wasting disk space).
This is perhaps pie in sky, but it seems like 3 things ought to be optionally considered for this: the MPAA rating on the file, the user-defined permissions on the file, and the user-defined permissions on a section. I think if this is treated similarly to traditional computer access roles this would be incredibly flexible, without being too complicated for most users – who would just use the default of MPAA rating. Only advanced users would enable the more complicated settings.
One other thing to consider: when do you prompt for access? Or rather, when do you take a granted access away? If you leave Plex running all the time (like I do), you don’t want unlocking a section once to unlock it until you restart.
I would really like to specify some sections (or better, collections) that can’t be displayed on some clients, or even the other way around, allow a client to only see a specific collection (which would be way easier, because you wouldn’t have to move movies to another section just for them to be hidden… I really like all my movies in one folder)
Anyway a big +1 from me as the kids are using the iPad to watch all their stuff on the Plex app (which is great BTW) and they have been known to watch things that are a tad inappropriate for their ages. But I find I can’t limit the folders that they can access as I put their movies and TV shows in another location or do it by ratings, most annoying.
I can’t see what they’re watching beyond sitting with them which pretty much defeats the object of the exercise.
Klexi sorta works but all I hear about is how rubbish Klexi is compared with the pukka Plex app from them. If you have kids you’ll get this, if you don’t you probably just won’t but trust me on it.
Apparently things that play fine on the Plex app won’t work in Klexi.
This has become even more of an issue with the latest release and the On Deck feature. Private Items can now appear more visibly in these panels and there is no way to clear them without removing them from plex entirely. For fun, i made some quick mockups, just to see what a PIN system could look like and thought I’d share them here. A note about the desktop client: I considered the fact that the pin could be easily discerned by others in the room as you navigate the numbers, but I figure that if someone else is in the room while you’re putting the pin in, you don’t care if they see what’s protected.
