Much faster (hopefully), smaller (mostly) and better PMS builds preview (1.15.0.573-123756e9a)

Hey all! New year, new builds! :tada:

This version fixes the ELF alignment issues experienced on some QNAP platforms (as well as in some other places). We had to do some changes in how we process our files before packaging, so this touched on all but the Windows builds. Please try them and let us know. A real beta is not too far out, hopefully! I’ll also update the first post with the new links.

@tamas, that’s awesome! Thanks so much! Does this build in the previously rolled out changes in the 1.14 betas from the standard release channel?

Edit: after playing around with this new build a bit, and seeing the bandwidth data in the dashboard, it seems like it does roll in the previous changes…

Yep, it has all the latest goodies!

My synology DS 118 refuses to transcode. Only when i downgrade to 2 mbps 720p, it helps a little bit but the stuttering will be there for a couple of times. Subs are an issue also. When i choose no subs the transcode is better. I used all the possibillties ( closed in, srt, embedded etc) but the problem stays.
Someone has the same problem?

Another DS 118 user here. Considering information posted here earlier (Nov 18 by megadime
and ChuckPA) I am not really surprised transcoding experience is not great. If Plex can’t use proprietary HW and therefore all the transcoding work has to be done in SW(!) it’s miraculous that video transcoding kinda works albeit very limited.

Synology Video app in contrary can use the proprietary HW for transcoding jobs. Wish Plex could use that as well or at least Synology could improve their Video app to make it as usable and feature rich as Plex is…

What actually bothers me is that Plex library indexing (with metadata scrapping) can put DS 118 into temporary unresponsive state. Means smb connections failing/dropping and operations lagging overall. Recent experience from last two published arm8 builds.

Hi There,
I’ve installed this latest build and for the love of god, as it stands after the issue I’ve been getting on Ubuntu with recording shows on Live TV, and it failing to allow other users to tune to a TV channel after so many recordings because either the Transcoder is stuck, or it just failed to shut the devices down properly, everything is actually working!!!
Here’s to running more tests with my remote users and more recordings with HW Transcoding on!!
My PC is a i5-3330 with 8Gb RAM close to 15Tb HDD, Nvidia GTX-750ti and 3 Hauppage WinTV DuoHD USB Tuners.

I’ll keep you posted, but nice one so far!!

Dave

I don’t suppose we are going to see a docket build anytime soon to test? Maybe on alpine to keep it nice and small :-)?

What’s an alpine? I used to have an Alpine stereo

@ChuckPa a big thank you for getting the repacking done for Linux and NAS’s =) It’s running beautifully on my 718+

Edit: Since my last posted this I have realized that hardware transcoding no longer works for me. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PMS, but no luck. Any suggestions @ChuckPa? and, I just tried again. This time, uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled.

What logs can I send you?

It’s one of the ā€œthinā€ linux OS packages that many Docker builds use as their base.

FYI - back in the day I was more of a Kenwood guy at the time as I couldn’t afford Alpine

Installed latest build on QNAP today, so far so good.

Any idea where I could get the previous alpha build? HW transcoding worked on it… doesn’t on the new build.

Which platform are you using?

Synology - Intel 64

FYI, also on ubuntu x64 HW transcoding is not working.

May I have the DEBUG logs for Ubuntu hardware transcoding not working?
Also, please create a separate thread and link it back to this one.
We will diagnose and resolve in the new thread.

Please create a new thread (standard praactice), link back to here.

In the new thread:

  1. Verify DEBUG logging, VEBOSE is OFF.
  2. Play just enough of the video to get the transcoder to engage (10 seconds is sufficient for this case)
  3. Stop Playback
  4. Wait 30 seconds
  5. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
  6. Attach the ZIP it presents you in the new thread.

@comio Is working here, but only allowing 2 devices to transcode even though I’ve got it at to 10 transcodes maximum.
@ChuckPa I know this is a long long shot, but will Linux PMS ever have full hardware transcoding in the near future? I know ffmpeg has it…
Other than only allowing 2 devices to transcode, my Live TV issues during and after multiple DVR recordings has gone, and it finally shuts my WinTV DuoHD Tuners down correctly unless it was the transcoderĀæ

@mw0dcm If you are using retail Nvidia Graphics card (think 10x0, etc.) for your HW transcoding, Nvidia has put a firmware limit for HW transcoding to 2 streams (regardless of whether the card could handle more or not). You have to use one of their ā€œEnterpriseā€ based GPU’s (Quadro P2000, etc.) to get the limit removed. So while you may tell Plex to do up to 10 HW transcoding streams, Nvidia is going to over-ride that at a limit of 2 for their retail boards.
