In the latest release note, I noticed this:
- (Music) Support for ‘releasetime’ tags in FLAC to give precise release dates.
Giving it a run on one of my music libraries, I found that it corrected a lot of the “January 1” release dates for those albums that have complete embedded release dates. Kudos!
However, on releases that have incomplete release dates (yyyy or yyyy-mm), I’ve seen the following:
- For albums that only have a year in the tag, Plex still assumes Jan. 1.
- In one case, the embedded tag is yyyy-mm, but Plex came up with a complete date.
For that second case, the album is Donald Fagen’s “The Nightfly.” There may be others, I haven’t gone through all of them.
The embedded Release Date is 1982-10.
Plex assigned the Originally Available date of 1982-10-16.
I assumed it didn’t accept the embedded date and queried Musicbrainz. However, none of the releases of this album on Musicbrainz have that release date. I also checked Discogs, AllMusic, and Last.FM, but they don’t have that release date for any release of this album either.
So where is Plex getting this date? I looked through several log files, but found no mention of this album. I may not have found the right log file.
