First of all, thank you very much for this whole ecosystem that I’ve been using for years and has always been top notch for my usage.
I need your help on something though. I’m lucky enough to be able to speak fluently several languages (French, Spanish and English).
The problem I’m facing is that, I can watch obviously shows in any of these languages but the Plex client setting is quite limiting for me when we get to subtitles tracks.
What I mean exactly is, if I setup my user profile like this:
English audio will not be subtitled
Spanish audio will be subtitled
French audio will be subtitled
I put as it doesn’t fit my need, the feature is working fine so far. I would prefer not to have them for any of the languages I do speak / understand.
Yes I have several libraries on several languages.
This bothers me to the point I don’t use the automatic subtitles, but I’m also a mange lover and can’t stand watching them in another language than the original language meant for the show… which means I have to select the subtitle track… Every episode.
There’s already an existing suggestion discussing an option to support more preferred languages with regards to audio/subtitle selection. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
The part about showing subtitles for foreign parts is trickier. The different subtitle frames/segments aren’t tagged with a language. If you’re i.e. watching Quentin Tarantino’s „Inglorious Basterds“ you’ll have English, French and German audio. The forced English subtitle track will contain the frames/segments for the French and German dialogs. Plex has no means to know which is which if you e.g. speak English and French but no German… if the English forced subtitle is selected, it’ll always show the subtitles for both other languages.

Yes this I understand very well and I agree. When there are several options within the same file, it should be up to the user to decide what he wants, that makes sense.
But if I have a file with French only, then Plex would know not to offer me the subtitles for it… does it make sense?
