Multi-version movies split during scheduled task

I’m aware that there’s lots of stuff going on at Plex HQ the past couple of weeks, but is there any update regarding this?

Bumping because this hasn’t been solved yet.

Is there a particular reason you have the resolution listed twice?

I haven’t done anything particularly special with my naming using the *ARRS, but I am not having this issue with my versions or editions. I just stack all of the technical stuff into regular brackets after the tmdb tag or edition tag if present. I’ll have to wait until I get home to check what I have specifically.

The resolution is only listed once, for compatibility with the *arr stack. The final tag is just an arbitrary text to differentiate the versions (per this topic); they could be “A” and “B” for all it matters.

This is all I’m doing and it works flawlessly.

Top Gun Maverick (2022)/Top Gun Maverick (2022) {tmdb-361743}.[Bluray-2160p.AV1.DTS.5.1.HDR10]{edition-IMAX}.mkv

Top Gun Maverick (2022)/Top Gun Maverick (2022) {tmdb-361743}.[Bluray-1080p.x264.TrueHD.Atmos.7.1]{edition-Imax}.mkv

I think I’d already tested it without any tags, but just to be sure I tried it again last night and same problem.

Frankenstein (2025)/Frankenstein (2025) {tmdb-1062722} [NF][WEBDL-2160p][DV HDR10][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h265]-HONE.mkv

Frankenstein (2025)/Frankenstein (2025) {tmdb-1062722} [NF][WEBDL-1080p][EAC3 Atmos 5.1][h265]-HONE.mkv

When adding the 4K version to plex, its correctly identified as a version of the same movie. But after a night of maintenance (presumably the full library update task), they become separated and instead show up as 2 different movie editions.

I still think having all of the codec info in a single square bracket will fix the issue. You currently have everything in separate square bracket chucks.

My library does not suffer from the same symptoms as yours when using my naming convention.

You want this for the file names: (I excluded the folder)
Frankenstein (2025) {tmdb-1062722}.[WEBDL-2160p.DV.HDR10.EAC3.Atmos.5.1.h265].mkv

Frankenstein (2025) {tmdb-1062722}.[WEBDL-1080p.EAC3.Atmos.5.1.h265].mkv

So far, with my media, the only time this combo ever gets split up is if the edition doesn’t match (Imax vs IMAX, etc) ← Plex should be able to utilize some sort of fuzzy matching to prevent this though I would think.

I agree with the user above. There is a bug when using multiple sets of brackets. For now it’s ymmv on what you will get.

Well the whole reason for this topic is the buggy behavior with my naming convention. I’m sure it could work with a different format like yours, but given the choice between waiting for this bug to be solved vs. changing the name of thousands of files (some of which are on a cloud drive), I would prefer the former obviously.

PMS correctly picks up these files as versions initially, from which I can infer that my naming convention should work. This is also consistent with the documentation, as well as being alluded to by @hsousa earlier in the topic:

But you seem to be following the naming recommendations, which is likely why PMS picks it up when it first scans the files… so maybe there’s a bug in one of the tasks that run during the maintenance window.
