I would love to see multi-zone support added to Plex, similar to what is available today for Sonos or Sqeezebox.
If you are not familiar with this feature, here is how it roughly works: On a remote control, for example your smartphone or tablet running Plex client, you can see all the other Plex clients that are available to be remotely controlled. They can be named, for example “kitchen” and “living room” and you can select both to be in the same zone, grouping them together. If you then chose some music to be played on that zone, both players will play the same title synchronously. That way you can enjoy the same music while you are moving about in your home. Should you then at a later point in time decide that you would want to watch a movie in the living room and not have the kitchen be part of it, you simply remove it from the zone and playback will stop in the kitchen.
The earlier mentioned products do this pretty well, but they are not very flexible when it comes to hardware support and can be very pricey. They also lack video and I can imagine that synchronous playback of video can be quite useful, though I am first and foremost looking for audio support.
+1!
I would LOVE! this feature to be added. It would simplify so many things when switching over to Squeezebox on the HTPC’s at home that drive the sound systems.
I too use squeezebox for this and am now considering a move to itunes/airplay instead.
Plex would be a nice solution as well.
Any thoughts on minimal/cheapest hardware for audio-only zones?
There are people working on a UI less Plex player for Raspberry Pi (there is a feature request in this forum to get it officially supported). Roku LT seems to be the better option for now as there is already a Plex client for it (not sure if it is remote-controllable). It also has build in WiFi, a case and a PSU.
Just added this, which takes a number of the features...
