Multiple file versions

Hi guys,

I have started to optimise all my TV Shows for Mobile, and TV, so all my shows have 2 versions.

I use LG’s WebOS to access plex via their official app, and the PS3 to access plex via their official app, and I don’t believe you can select the version you want to watch, so… what does plex do?

Because I’ve used plex to optimise the files, will it chose the right files? Might I get the mobile version on the TV? Or can I select the version using the WebOS app, and the Android app?

Thanks in advance

I can’t speak for the devices you mentioned, but on the Roku, when you click on the play button it gives you the option to choose a version (if there are multiple versions). On plex web it’s different, instead of using the play button and being given the option, you have to click on the 3 dots, which then gives you the option to choose a version. I would hazard a guess the option for you to choose exists, the trick will be finding it.

Another thought, when in plex web, does the movie/tv show episode image have a 2 (or higher number) in the top left corner of the shows poster? This is the number of versions that exist for the show that plex knows of. If you don’t see the number it means there is only one version. I believe you have to use plex web to see the number…at least I don’t see it on my Roku.

Hope that helps.

First, all Plex players should pick the best version based on your overall quality settings for that Plex player. These overall quality settings are usually listed under Settings with a header like Video or Player and the options are shown as Mbps or kbps. Just be aware that if you set it too low and your are accessing content of higher quality, your Plex player may choose to send it to PMS to transcode it to the lower quality of your setting.

What choices are offered can vary by device. My understanding is that eventually all Plex players will have 3 quality options: quality (for your local content), remote (for content from other peoples PMS libraries that are shared with you) and online (for content thru channels or watch later/queue). And you can also choose to change the quality for each individual video from the play screen, if the Plex player provides the media options.

On Plex Web, overall quality settings are under Setting (Web) > Player. The “…” will show you info about the media including if there are multiple versions availalbe. To change the quality setting for each individual video, after you start playing the video, from the play screen, choose the three cables icon.

On Android (I only see one quality setting on my Android device), overall quality setting is under Settings > Video > Video. To change the quality setting for each individual video, after you start playing the video, from the play screen, choose the gear icon.
