I’m thinking of adding a second media server to my network. can anybody think of a reason why I should not?
I would like to move my movies to a dedicated machine to avoid slowing down my general desktop. And as I have a spare machine available (thanks to a friend) I thought it might be a good idea to have a movie server and a music server.
Quite possible.
Just try it if it suits your use case. Use the same plex account you’re already using with the existing server.
Tip: while setting up the second server, use the local web app loaded from that server’s private IP address. Use the browser’s ‘private’/‘incognito’ mode.
It helps avoiding confusion if you keep the other server shut down during this.
Then read up on customizing the various Plex app’s homepage and side bars, so you can have your movie library from one server and e.g. the music library from the other sitting above each other – quickly accessible.
Thanks for your swift response. Setting up the second server and configuring the libraries isn’t a problem.
To be able to see and access both servers from a single dashboard I have to turn on remote access on both servers! This is something that I’m not comfortable with as it opens up the servers to internet accessibility. Which I don’t want. I have looked at the network configuration settings and am not sure if I can control access from here without turning on remote access. Thoughts please.
no you don’t. not sure why you think you do. you just need to sign into them ( and you don’t even need to do that if you don’t really care about utilizing your Plex Pass features on that server)
mediabox my main server that is signed in and remote access is enabled and the one running on my QNAP NAS is not even signed in.
Both servers are windows servers. Both are logged in. But for some reason each server see’s the other server as a remote server. And the only way I’ve found so far is to allow remote access. Not ideal but it allows me to manipulate the layout whilst trying to find the network solution I require.
No joy with changing local dns on servers. Unable to change dns on router. ISP blocks changes,
Both servers are available to all clients,I including IOS, LG smart TV and Firestick. So I’m thinking I shouldn’t continue to worry about this as it was only for my benefit in administering the servers from a single screen. If I need to I can always turn on remote access, or get up and move to the other screen. Thanks for all your help.
