if i select settings from the poster i’m given an option of selection which of the two versions i want to play?

That’s the expected behaviour.

this also messes with my total movie count, i.e. when plex combines movie files under one poster plex counts it as one moviie.

Of course. After all, it is the same movie. So it should not increase the movie count if you have two versions of the same movie.

so how do i now separate these two movies that have apparently been combined by plex?

If you need an overview of which items have several files, there is the new “Duplicates” filter.
