I recently acquired a new series and decided the most efficient way of steaming it would be to encode it into two separate files. A subbed English version (For signs & intro outros) and a subbed Japanese version.
\TV series\season \No game no life S01 EP01 (Subbed)
\TV series\season \No game no life S01 EP01 (Dubbed)
However I couldn’t help but notice that plex picks it up as a 2 part file instead of noticing it as 2 individual files.
Is there any possible way for plex to notice the two separate files as the same file but different versions or is there a way to rig plex to do so? Thanks in advance.
No there is no way of doing this except you creating a completely separate folder structures for the subbed and the dubbed version of the series.
Then use the Split apart feature the separate both versions and rename them accordingly.
But I for one find this approach quite crude and not efficient at all.
You know, there is support for switchable subtitle and audio tracks in Plex. If you have the subs as separate tracks (vs. burned-in), you could make a version of the show which contains all varieties. You can then decide on the preplay screen of every episode which audio and subtitle you want (or can even switch mid-epsiode).
That’s what the automatic track selection is intended for, which you find under Settings - Server - Languages
Working with mobile devices and consoles mkv files that have .sup subtitles is too tricky and to much of a variable. So I decided to instead to do two separate selections.
I had a similar problem though maybe not the same. Plex is showing that there were 2 versions of episodes. I tried creating a new show folder (Show_Dudded/Season 01/episodes), adding a new season folder in the main show folder with a suffix on the episodes (Show/Season 01 Dubbed/episoded_dud), and having just the suffixed episodes inside the season folder (Show/Season 01/episoded_dud). All had the same result.
Plex showed in the episode information screen that there were two files but I couldn’t find how to select which one I wanted to play.
I still can’t select which version to play from the local server menu or from the browser menu. However on the Roku, I’m able to select which version (blindly).
I just need to select a Version from the Streams menu and see what the audio language is. I don’t know if this helps or not but I found this post while trying to figure out how to have both subbed and dubbed versions of shows.
The version select from the Streams menu worked for all the name schemes I mentioned above.
