Multiple versions of a movie with different quality versions limits quality to the first version imported

Server Version#: CentOS 7.4, PMS 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#:

I encode multiple quality levels of a movie to normally include original 4K, 10Mbps 4K, 1080p and 480p. The format gets imported into Plex first becomes the highest video and audio quality that plays unless I manually use the Select Versions option and choose a higher quality movie selection.
When the 480p file was imported first and I click on the movie poster it lists SD quality for video and AAC stereo for audio which is my lowest quality format even though there are three other versions merged with better quality (4K HEVC HDR and True-HD audio for the original format).
My question is can this behavior be changed to list multiple options for the default and/or list the highest quality format as default? Or what is the easiest way to fix the selection so it defaults to the highest quality when you click on the movie poster? Thanks.

I have the same issue with PMS 1.15.2.793 on my local QNAP server.
This seems may be a web console issue. Navigating the movies from the player on my Amazon TV plays the highest supported quality and was not limited to the first imported version. Playing the movie from the web console seems to be limited to the first version imported.
I did more testing and behavior changes with the ‘Automatically adjust quality (Beta)’ setting.
With ‘Automatically adjust quality’ off/un-checked playing the movie from the web console limits the maximum bitrate to the first version imported. With ‘Automatically adjust quality’ on/checked, the video poster shows the highest quality available (4K, TrueHD). However, playback from the web console player in Edge and Chrome is starting at Auto:0.2Mbps,SD which is pausing frequently and looks terrible. This is playing from the server on my local gigabit LAN connection where the 4K version plays fine if I force that version. This would indicate all video is being transcoded from the highest quality source file instead of selecting the closest quality to the target device capabilities.
This is why I don’t use ‘Automatically adjust quality’ due to forcing a transcode. Maybe the player is just not detecting my Windows 10 PC capabilities properly?

There are 2 ways to currently do this.

  1. Only save the highest quality version (4k, etc.) and then either have Plex run real-time transcoding (if your system is beefy enough) or create “optimized versions” within Plex.

  2. Create separate Library folders for each resolution (Movies_4K, Movies_1080p, etc.)
