Music Genre Source on Plexamp

Probably nothing you did wrong, you could have been bitten by a transient bug, or had leftover metadata which was renewed and corrected upon refresh.

Glad to hear you got rid of those annoying numbered genres!

One more question for you, Elan… Why is there not an option to write to the tags on music like most other music library software? Allmusic.com metadata is my favorite source and I wish I could have Plex write the genre info directly to the tags.

Thanks again for your help…

Philosophically we’ve just never wanted to modify people’s media files, opens up a can of worms and potential for damage.

There are a few good third party tools (MusicBrainz EInstein, Yate) that will tag your audio files with this data in a way that Plex sees and honors the matching. I’d highly recommend these for trying to manage metadata within the files themselves vs just the Plex DB

I’ve tried MusicBrainz Picard and I think that’s where a lot of the funky numbered genres came from

Yate appears to be Mac only… I’m a Windows user.

I can’t find anything for Einstein. Can you tell me more about it so I can find it?

i think he’s dead

:milky_way: You’re missing the one and all important genre: 42

Jokes aside, I have seen the number genre problem too (and it used to be much worse.)

Curious to know what album lives in “42”?

Don’t ask me how or why. But if anyone has a short and succinct conspiracy theory behind the “Lord Willin’” album being tagged as “42”, I am all ears.

Probably metadata tags in one or more of the files on that album.

Check this setting too.

Elan! Long time no see virtual friend! I did a full library refresh after posting and let the meta data refresh — all is well. No more weird numbers in the genre section. Thank you for taking the time to write us!

Glad to hear!
