Plexamp - Where do genres/styles come from?

I’m a data nerd and have a massive collection I’ve been curating with Jaikoz. I manually add genres, styles, moods, and occasions from allmusic.

I’ve recently started playing with Plexamp and am liking the way it uses genres/styles, but where are they coming from? I noticed it adds some things that don’t exist at allmusic (Hyperpop) and it also caught some things that allmusic has changed (Psychedelic changed to Psychedelic/Garage).

It’s definitely reading my tags, and it looks like it’s using allmusic as a source, but also using others?

Mainly allmusic. If they don’t have anything on that album//artist, occasionally also from last.fm
Rest of metadata is primarily taken from musicbrainz.org

Whether your metadata are used can be configured in the properties of your music library.

Ah, last.fm explains the hyperpop genre, I just found it for 1000 Gecs.
Thank you.

In the settings I have Genres set to “embedded tags”. I don’t know why it scraped last.fm. Not a deal breaker, just curious because I occasionally audit Genres and Moods and stuff for typos or mis-pastes. That’s the only genre I found that mismatches my allmusic list and I doubt anyone will be searching, or even wanting, hyperpop.

There is a dedicated preference just for genres. Depending on how it’s set, genres can come from both sources.
And once they’re in Plex, they may not go away even when you change that preference. This is particularly true for artists.

So if I make changes to genres, the actual tags in the files, it seems a regular “scan library files” doesn’t pick up the changes. If I go to Manage Library>Refresh All Metadata, it pops a “forces data from the internet” dialog. Is it really going to the internet, or is it going to follow my settings and rescan all data from scratch?

Just try it out on a few albums. You can Refresh Metadata on albums and artists. It isn’t necessary to do the whole library every time.

Man, I wish I knew about this before. This is working exactly how I want. Thank you and thanks for answering all my questions. I’m sure there’ll be a couple more.
