Music genres being cleared by Plex

Server Version#: 1.23.6.4810
Player Version#: plexamp 3.5.0
Hi all

I noticed yesterday that Plex had lost 75%+ of the genres on my music.

I restored a backup of the database and this morning the issue is back.

Nearly every album has no genres showing up.

Has anyone seen this issue? Any ideas how to stop it from happening again?

Thanks

Do you mean the albums actually have no genres assigned to them if you check it via Plex Web – or is this only about the genre not showing on the album details in Plexamp?

Sorry - the albums in plex Web, plexamp and plex android clients show no genre tags.

Restoring a backup from yesterday and the genre tags are back.

When you edit your music library, go to the “Advanced” tab and look at the selector for “Genres”.
What is it set to?

It was set to plex music, just changed it back to local tags and will see if it resets tomorrow.

Thanks

Keep in mind that doing so will disable some of the Radios.

Never knew that but what else can I do since the plex one has started clearing the tags completely?

Unfortunately you can have only one. You must decide which is more important for you.

Sorry I think I am misunderstanding I blame the heat

Are you saying you can either have radio function or genre tags but not both?

Considering this just started I am guessing that something has been changed causing the issue?

With Genres set to “Plex Music”, you do have genre tags, but not the ones from your embedded meta tags. They will be instead loaded from allmusic.com, together with Styles.

If you prefer the genres from your meta tags, Plex will disable loading genre and “styles” from allmusic.com
But with the styles missing, radios will not work.

Ah OK makes sense, the only problem is it is deleting the genres so there are none. The music is matched properly.

Yeah, unfortunately the genres on allmusic.com are pretty much useless and very patchy in general. So quite a few albums of yours might get no genres at all.

Came here to say that I’m having the same issues. About 10k albums now have either Pop/Rock or nothing at all as genre since a couple of days, and I spent a crazy amount of time correcting these.

Most of my collections and playlists are also broken now, since a lot of them were based on genre tags.
Basically the entire way I used Plex Music has been erased right now.

Unfortunately I have no backups of my Plex data, so that definitely sucks for me.
Seems like some functionality was rolled out that shouldn’t have been defaulted to clearing all existing genre tags.
I think this was included in v 1.23.5.4841: (Music) If genre preference is “Plex Music” don’t read genre from tags (#12812).

I’ll switch and start over I guess…

Hi Dregan_luna

I know they should have thought it through/tested it more - especially as the new site seems to be so poor for genre’s even if they are on the album website the API doesn’t have them!

I am sure it is still doing something as I am missing some albums in Genres.

In regards to the backup if you go to Settings and Scheduled Tasks do you have a tick against " Backup database every three days" if so have a look at the backup directory and try restoring the DB?

SASSBS, you are a life saver!
I didn’t know I had that turned on. I have already restored one of the backups and it brought back all my genres.

Thank you so much! ^^

I would like to add that I thought I had “embedded tags” selected as option, I remember struggling with that in the past. I’ll keep an eye out to see if that option changes back to “plex music”.

What the hell? The days of my life spent sorting out tags on all my music files, Plex decides it’s going to just wipe out all my work? I wouldn’t mind if setting the option back to local tags for genre refreshed all the albums, but it doesn’t. I’ve done that, re-scanned the library, and my local tags still aren’t being honoured. What a joke.
