Music Library, Advanced Options - Genres - What does this do?

Before I click the “Save Changes” button, I would like to know how this affects my library.

The library is currently set to Plex Music for the genres. However, all of the albums seem to read and apply the various genres from the individual tracks, and apply it to the genre for the album. As an example, the album “Forrest Gump: The Soundtrack” in my library has about 10 genres listed for it. So, using the default setting of Plex Music for genres is doing exactly what I want it to do for each album. :+1: :grinning:

The Artist genre, however is a different matter. Even though none of my albums or tracks have “Pop/Rock” as an actual genre, more than half of my library has that for the Artist Genre. If I use a filtered list for that genre, it even has “Andy Williams” just two rows down from “AC/DC.” and “Alice Cooper” None of the albums for those artists has “Pop/Rock” as a genre.

If I apply the change to use embedded tags, will the Artists inherit the genres from the albums?

Before the library was converted to the new system, That is exactly what happened, and it made sense to me. Alice and Andy are not the same genre or style of music, and the genres for those artists always matched the underlying albums.

If that’s not the case, what happens? Do I lose the moods and styles associated with the artist that are currently listed?

Any info appreciated.

For anyone else annoyed by the catch-all “genre” info for artists that is provided by AllMusic in your library, change the settings in advanced for “Genres” to “Embedded Tags” Refresh the metadata for library, and the artists will inherit the genres from the embedded tags of the associated albums.

The Artist genres make sense now, at least to me.
