I have had no luck with Filebot. Does anyone have suggestions on auto-renaming of music video files?
Why are you renaming music videos? Plex will not match them, there isn’t an agent for music videos.
So that I have proper names for the videos without having to go through and rename each one. And no, there isn’t specific support for music videos, but I use the home movie library set up.
If you are setting up music videos as a home video library, the filename will be used. UNLESS you have metadata in an MP4 file. Clear out the metadata or make sure the metadata is correct.
None of this is correct. There is support for music videos in the Plex Media Server. Naming convention link here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/205568377-Adding-Local-Artist-and-Music-Videos
Personally I use the “Inline Videos” where the music video files are stored in the same folder as the music files themselves. There is also a “Global Music Videos Folder” option as well.
Some examples
Sometimes Plex moves their help articles around and the link breaks so I’m copying some of the stuff here for posterity:
For inline videos:
Music/Artist_Name - Album_Name/Track_Filename - Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext
I’m using iTunes to manage my music folder structure and this works for me:
Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/Track_Filename - Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext
For using a global music videos folder:
GlobalFolder/Artist_Name - Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext
or
GlobalFolder/Artist_Name/Artist_Name(optional) - Descriptive_Name-Video_type.ext
Final note on the file name
Like I said above, I’m using iTunes to manage my music files and folder structure. It automatically adds the track number to the file name which Plex will read by default. So the file 02 Nobody Speak-video.mp4
will get pulled into Plex with the title “02 Nobody Speak”.
To fix that you use the “Descriptive_Name” in the file name like so: 02 Nobody Speak - Nobody Speak-video.mp4
. Note that there are spaces around the first hyphen (-
) and no spaces around the second one (-
).
From the help article:
To have the music video associated with the track, it must start with the exact filename of the corresponding music track and must be in the same directory as that track.
However it’s worth noting that Music Video support currently only available when using the Web app. I would imagine that it will slowly find it’s way into other products over time.

Those instructions are for adding videos to a Music library. The OP is making a Home Movie library, so his videos are independent from his Music library. If he doesn’t have any tracks for the Music Video artist, his videos won’t appear in a Music library.

That’s not true. Music Videos are supported on all current Plex clients. I can’t think of one that doesn’t.
