My "collection" folders vs. Plex's standard library view

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 4.12.3

When watching TV shows and movies on my own computer, I don’t use Plex, I just browse to the folder with Windows Explorer and play the files with VLC or PowerDVD. I have Plex for streaming media to my own mobile devices and my roommate’s devices.

The issue I’m having stems from Plex’s interpretation of the following folder structure:

+ Series [this is the Plex "TV Shows" library folder]
  + Star Trek
    +Deep Space Nine
      +Season 1
        - <episode files>
      + Season 2
        - <episode files>
    ...
    + Voyager
      + Season 1
        - <episode files>
      + Season 2
        - <episode files>
    ...

I organized the files this way because Plex is not my primary local media library tool.

Plex originally scanned this and interpreted it as a folder containing Star Trek: The Original Series, with multiple versions of each episode, which is obviously incorrect.

It would be nice if there was a way to tell Plex “No, this ‘Star Trek’ folder is a Collection; treat each subfolder as a separate series”.

In the meantime, my options are to either reorganize my files (annoying, frustrating even), or switch the Plex TV Shows library to Folder view and tell my roommate to do the same (also annoying).

Consider this a feature request, I guess.

Plex depends on you following some basic rules / naming conventions for it to be able to properly identify your media… that’s especially true when it comes to tv shows.

That being said… you should be able to fix your matches on the tv show level in your Plex library. If Plex has merged your shows which are organized in different folders you might need to split those shows manually beforehand.
