My current Plex setup is that I don’t actually have a dedicated computer set up as a server. I upload all my video files to OneDrive and then Plex grabs all the files from that to build my library.
Would getting a PR2100 or a PR4100 be better than this setup? What would be the pros and cons of switching to a dedicated NAS to run my Plex server?
Only reason I ask is because I’m running out of space on OneDrive and rather than pay for more space on some other cloud service, a dedicated NAS might be somewhat cheaper in the long term, especially because I can use the NAS for other stuff too.
Hello
I use a PR4100 to store my personal data and also for my library for Plex.
The advantage of a NAS (a personal cloud data is stored at home) plus for PLEX the PR4100 has a dedicated transcoder
Quad Core CPU
4GB RAM expandable to 16
and the NAS mounted in RAID 5
Personally I have a storage of 4x8TB (32GB) real available in RAID 5 24TB
If this question is being asked on purely a cost basis, I think you’ll be far better off staying with the cloud-based service you have. A PR2100/4100 fitted with the necessary hard-drives is not cheap to initially setup.
Of course if your OneDrive files are only avaialble when online you shouldn’t have that restriction either with files stored locally on a NAS. Particularly useful for much larger encoded movies, etc.
