I’m in the process of purchasing this NAS server. I’m reading about how effective the Plex media server is when installed on the PR4100. What are the benefits of installing Plex on the server as opposed to having Plex installed on my desktop and accessing the server drives that way (which I’m doing now through both my Roku and Nvidia shield)?
I’m not familiar with the specs of the PR4100. I’m assuming your desktop is more powerful than the NAS specs wise. Therefore you can do more simultaneous transcodes if needed. If you never had to transcode than running the server on the NAS May work for you. I run the server on my desktop pointing to the media on my NAS and any client can play from the server. The only benefit I can see is that you don’t have to have your PC on all the time (electricity/$) would cost more to keep running than a NAS. I also have a Nvidia shield that is low power and is a server too which works well for me. You could always maybe run a NAS on both and have one always running on the NAS and if need more horsepower, use the desktop. I run multiple servers on a desktop, laptop and Shield.
