I would like my own trailers ONLY as an option. I have a huge library of movie shorts (aka cartoons) that were ususally played before movies at drive-ins ( wayyy back when) I would like that option only AND to have a simple trailer folder for the entire lbirary that would be randomly picked OR have the option to assign them to movies. I could care less about movies in the theaters past or present. I realize you can do this NOW but it's tedious to set up. A simple local trailer folder for all moveis will do.

You can currently set 1 single file to be a pre-roll. I guess what you would like is an expansion of that feature to randomly select from a folder, instead of being a specific file?

Specifically It would be nice to set the number that would play as well. You could even get more specific and do themed tailers for horror flicks etc. And example would be "broomstick bunny" (bugs bunny) before Young Frankenstein..
if you run linux you could make a cornjob to rename files every so often to that one set in plex, so that a youll get a new one every so often.

I have plex folder with some old WB cartoons. I would like to point plex sever to that folder and have plex select a random cartoon, play it, then play the pre-roll, then the movie. With or without a preview. Is this currently possible? I’ve read every topic that turned up in search but did not find
Sort of. It you set up a library with only those cartoons, but then you also need a make a copy and let PMS see it as the trailer. In your trailer settings, let it just choose from your library only and not to use the automatic ones.

So this can be done? I too have a folder with WB & Disney cartoons and more… Please explain in better detail how to create my own trailers from old cartoons… What do you mean by “make a copy”
Here is a screenshot of the trailers I have in “extras..” I don’t know why these can’t be played before the movie.

I may have misunderstood what you are trying to do. Are you trying to play specific extras before a specific movie? i.e., you want to play those 2 extras before 10,000 BC. If so, that is not possible. The trailers that play before a movie are chosen at random.
I’ll take random! Tell me how to set that up! If it can be ANY of my own personal cartoons, let’s rock!

You say you have quite a few cartoons. I would imagine scattering them amongst the movie folders and naming them with the -trailer tag would allow plex to pick and choose randomly which ones play. The only thing is plex would not play the ones in the same folder as the movie being played (just like it wouldn’t play the trailer for 10000 BC if you were going to watch it).

What would be the setting to use to activate the my own cartoon trailers? No matter what setting I use it seems to download a trailer from movies already in my library.
Since you already have local trailers showing up in your library, all you need to do is make sure your settings match the setting below. Keep in mind that the trailers chosen are based on the rating of the item being played. i.e. If you watch a PG rated movie, it will only select trailers from other movies you have that are also rated PG or lower.
still doesn’t work… the system downloads trailers from movies in my library and plays them. I don’t want that to happen.
Yeah, what the OP is asking for can’t currently be done. While Plex does understand that there are local extras, you cannot limit the trailers to be picked from the local extras. It’s a desirable feature as I’ve lost count of the number of times the downloaded trailer was complete crap compared to my local version.
PMS should only be downloading trailers if you told it to. Edit your library, find the setting to download trailers and extras and turn it off.
