I have a relatively new (1 month old) TerraMaster F2-220 with a new NAS-optimized 8TB hard drive.
I am currently doing a mass upload of a family member’s DVD collection and decided to use Plex as the content management software. This is a fairly large collection (1,000+ DVDs) so I wanted to make sure to check that all the files were readable by Plex as I go. For this reason (and it may have bit me) I started uploading the DVDs into the /home/plex/Library directory of the TerraMaster NAS and used that as my Library.
About 3 days ago, I had connectivity issues with the NAS that required me to reboot it (which I was unable to do until today). After the reboot, the NAS went through the initial setup process for some reason but detected the already-installed OS so it didn’t seem to be an issue. I started the Plex Server* and the Libraries on the side bar were gone. I went to add the media back to the library and the folders were still there but then Plex was unable to detect the media files within the folder. Then I went to the file browser and my media folders with 300+ DVDs were missing. Is there any way to be able to recover those files?
*when I went to start the Plex server, I accidentally hit the “reset” button →
Okay, I have confirmed that clicking the “Reset” button does, in fact, delete any user-created folders within the /home/plex/Library directory. Why this does such a thing without a confirmation dialog, I will never understand. Recovering the files seems extremely unlikely and it is a question for TerraMaster rather than a post on this forum here, but if you have any suggestions, I’m more than open to them.
I’m not familiar with TerraMaster, however I used Synology NAS, and with synology I have a recycle bin enabled. I can go into the web UI of synology and undo delete of any files.
Have you tried checking the recycle bin of terramaster?
TerraMaster does have a recycle bin and none of the files I lost were in there. Fortunately, I haven’t cleared the recycle bin yet nor have I uploaded any new files to the drive so I may still be a able to do some kind of file recovery.
As a rule you should not store your own Media within the plex directory or any subfolders within this directory.
This area is only for the use of the plex software itself.
If it is like the Synology, the main reason they make this folder visible is to make it easier for people to access the log files when reporting a problem.
This is correct. Plex is basically an app and the Plex folder is the app data folder. Clearing the app data (reset in this case) erases everything and sets the app back to the beginning. PMS won’t be able to see your media files in that location either. Place your media files in the public folder.
