I set up a Plex server on Unraid. I am able to access my files using my local network and remotely via the Plex app without wifi. A friend confirmed that they were able to access my libraries I shared with them from their phone, unknown whether they were on wifi. Either way, it appears that remote access works. I confirmed I am not double-natted, either.
I shared my library with a friend who has Comcast Xfinity Xfi, and has one of the combination modem/routers they rent from Comcast. I shared my server with them, but they were unable to connect via their Plex application while on their wifi. I had them disable their device’s wifi, use cellular, and confirmed that they were able to stream content from my library. Turning their wifi back on disconnected them from my server again. I think there is some security setting or incompatibility with XFi/hardware that keeps them from connecting to my server.
I confirmed that the user logged into their Comcast portal and disabled the Advanced Security features. I restarted my Plex server, they reinstalled their Plex app, but had the same behavior. Still no connection to my server over wifi. I was on a zoom call with them at the time, so I can confirm that their internet was functioning just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this or know of a potential solution? I searched the forums, but all the posts I could find are about setting up the Plex server within a Comcast ISP home. I tried to work with the user to figure out the problem, but couldn’t see any clear paths to resolve it. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I don’t know… that’ll depend on what part of the communication they’re actually blocking.
Assuming you don’t have a static public IP address, you should focus on the port you’re using for your remote access.
Try to connect with your IP from a browser on the XFinity connection, I wouldn’t assume it’s IP blocked.
https://(server’s-WAN-ip):34200/web
It should give you a certificate warning if you connect. If you get a 404 or something then maybe it’s actually blocked.
There were a few things that happened in succession, at least one of which must have caused this issue to be fixed.
My friend had forgotten their router’s admin login, so we had to do a factory reset on the device. After it went through the usual restart, Comcast automatically applied its network and Advanced Security settings. The whole process took a good 20 minutes or more.
After that, I had my friend hit the public IP /web that @charliemurphy suggested. They were able to see the libraries and play media, so the traffic wasn’t blocked. I then had them try to connect via the Plex app again, and they were able to see my shared libraries and play content.
It looks like the factory reset on the Comcast modem combined with whatever security settings being reapplied did the trick. Not sure which particular part was the real cause, though. At least we could avoid having to modify traffic filters.
