Absolutely brain-fried over Remote Access issues

I have a lifetime subscription for Plex but I’ve not been using it very much for the past 6 months because of remote access issues. Even inside my own house and with everything hardwired together, Plex would give me a pop-up warning that I was trying to access things remotely and it would limit my speeds to 2mbps. Sometimes it won’t even load at all. Other times it’ll finally load my library after many attempts of trying to view it. I run Plex on my computer but all my files are on a Synology DiskStation that’s plugged directly into my xfinity router - which is plugged directly into my computer. I then access Plex through my Nvidia Shield TV that’s connected to my television. I used to be able to watch Plex even if my internet was down because everything was just connected together, but now it acts like I’m trying to connect from another country and wants to restrict everything to the bare minimum speeds when it does decide to work. So needless to say, I would really like to try to resolve this whole thing after half a year of frustration. Everything was working fine and then my power went out one day. I think that my IP address changed when that happened but I don’t know how to confirm that . After turning everything back on, remote access was red and stays that way. I have tried everything I could think about over the past few months that might a fix the issue but without any luck. Today I was dealing with some unrelated issue and turned off my Windows firewall for a few minutes and the remote access in Plex turned green and remains that way as long as “Public Networks” in my Windows firewall is toggled off. “Private Networks” being toggled off keeps the remote access red. So I think I may have narrowed it down to something to do with the firewall. However, I’m on comcast xfinity and there’s no way to access port forwarding settings anymore on their website, it has to be done in the app(which sucks). So in the app, I go to port forwarding and there’s 1 setting that was set up long ago. It’s for Plex and it says “Reserved IP Address” which isn’t the current IP address listed in either Private or Public section of Plex’s remote access. I also have it set to Port 32400 and TCP/UDP(just switching it to only TCP doesn’t fix the problem). The xfinity app doesn’t allow me to delete this port forward entry. It shows an option to delete, it appears to delete it and then when I go back to the section, it’s there again. There’s also no way to change the reserved IP address in the options. I attempted to create a new port forward and attempted to give it a range of 20,000 to 50,000 based on information on the Plex website, however I’m unable to create that because the other entry already has a number that falls between those. It just seems like I’m close to figuring it out but I’m overlooking something and I don’t know what. If someone reads this and has had a similar issue and knows how to fix it, I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Have you looked over our troubleshooting guide. Troubleshooting Remote Access | Plex Support

Don’t miss the stuff at the very bottom about Xfinity.

Yes I saw that, however it’s outdated as xfinity no longer allows access via their website. It’s all done on their mobile app and there are fewer settings that I have access to on it.

You need to get to the bottom of that before you even think about remote access.

are these not instructions for their app?

Use Xfinity xFi Advanced Security - Xfinity Support

Agreed. I’m stumped though. It doesn’t make sense that it shouldn’t be working fine on my own network, especially with everything hardwired.

Yes, I am aware of how to use their app. However, I can’t change anything inside of it. As I mentioned, I cannot delete the port forward entry that was originally working fine. Even deleting it and getting a confirmation that it’s deleted, it appears again as soon as I go back to the port forwarding section in the mobile app. In that existing entry, I can change the port number, but I can’t add a port range - which was how I originally thought I could fix the problem. I thought I could just edit it with a different port or port range, something that Plex doesn’t use and then let the entry remain there, useless while I create a new entry that works. But it’s as if it’s perpetually there, stuck in their system. I can freely create brand new entries and edit/delete those without issue.

The only port you need for remote access is 32400.

What is the local IP address range you use for your local devices?

I don’t have anything specified. I was willing to change that if I needed to. Between this thread and 2 others at other locations online, I’m still at square one, with the same problem, despite literal weeks of troubleshooting.

If you are getting throttled locally to 2MBs I suspect that plex thinks the traffic is WAN and not LAN. What is the IP range you use for your home devices?
IE 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or something else

Do you have xFi Advanced Security installed/enabled?

If you cannot change the port forwarding ip setup, can you change the IP of the computer to use the old address?

No, I don’t have xFi Advanced Security on, because it caused problems in the past. I managed to get ahold of a tech person at Xfinity after about 9 hours of talking to different people and getting transferred around, but then after an hour of talking to the guy, we lost connection and they never called me back. He said he was familiar with Plex and used it himself. He tried several things and had me try other things and he said he felt certain it was a Plex issue. So now I don’t know what to think. It’s just frustration upon frustration and makes me want to just try some other similar service but I dislike all the ones I’ve looked into.

Make sure debug logging is enabled in pms. Restart pms, wait 3 minutes without doing anything. Grab the server logs and post them. Then provide screenshots of the remote access page for pms, and the port forwarding page from your router. If your router has a built in firewall, provide a shot of that page too. You can pm anything to me you don’t want to share publicly.
