A friend of mine has asked if I can recommend a simple cheap all in one solution for them to get into Plex after seeing my setup, I was wondering whether anyone who has experience with the latest my cloud duos can recommend them for basic usage, no transcoding would be required, also does the server app get updated in line with the latest version.

The Duo is nice. It can transcode too. PMS for the Duo is currently beta so your friend will need a Plex Pass to be able to get it. There is no public version available.
1.15 is the first release for it.
didnt know the wd home duo had a beta?
where is this then as how would you even update it as there no option on the cloud homes to update… as its a custom plex version 
The My Cloud and MY Cloud Duo come pre-installed with an initial release of that beta. I thought all WD devices have the option to manually install an update. Much faster (hopefully), smaller (mostly) and better PMS builds preview (1.15.0.573-123756e9a)

Oh sorry. I take that back. The My Cloud Home and Duo do not allow manual updates. There isn’t a download available for them in the link above. You’ll need to wait for the release to make it to the official WD app store.
yea and this is the issue as who earth do i contact in wd for this to even happen… wd support is useless but someone at plex must have details of the wd team who asked for this custom sort after plex version

WD was provided a version so they could have something to release. Most NAS vendors typically do not provide beta software. Once 1.15 is deemed stable, I’m sure they will offer that version to update, just as all their other NAS devices will have the update.
Any idea when the MyCloudHome version will be stable? because I fear the longer it stays at 1.12.x the higher chance of issues streaming media will increase.
I wasn’t aware 1.12 was the latest version available. AFAIK, it should be 1.14.

i cant see WD ever updating the custom plex version they have on this device as been so long now and nothing has changed 
i ended up getting the ex2 ultra as at least i can install the latest stable plex release
