I have been searching Google and the Plex forums most of the day looking for an answer to this. I’m more than willing to rename my media but I’m just not sure what format to use and have tried a few different ways. I’m running the latest PMS and have the odd movie that is broken into 2 discs with 2 parts per disc. So…
Movie Title Folder
> Movie Title - Disc1 - Part1
> Movie Title - Disc1 - Part2
> Movie Title - Disc2 - Part1
> Movie Title - Disc2 - Part2
What would be the correct way to organize/name this so it ends up under one Movie Title within Plex and stacks?
Thanks
Anybody?

I have read through this a few times. So is it not possible to have Plex recognize files named this way as one movie? I don't really care if they don't stack but what I end up with in Plex is "Movie Title Disc 1" and "Movie Title Disc2". No way for it to use the folder name? All 4 files are under one flat directory.
well, 4 parts to 1 movie kinda means, part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4 doesn't it?
Your best bet is to merge them into one file. Not all players recognize stacked media. I use virtuadub.
I would guess that you need to name this like a four part movie. Combing the disk number and part number is probably screwing it up.
Movie title - disk1.ext
Movie title - disk2.ext
Movie title - disk3.ext
Movie title - disk4.ext
should work. I think what comes before the file number indicator has to be identical.
Just name them like you normally would for plex, then append the name with " - ptxx" x being the part number... such as
The Pianist (2002) - pt01.mkv
The Pianist (2002) - pt02.mkv
Plex will show and play it as one continuous movie. I've been using this technique for including special features or extras into my movies. Sadly plex doesn't seem to offer any better way to handle extras than to just tack them on the end of a film. But at least this way they are kept as separate files so that when/if the feature becomes available, I won't have to re-rip and encode my movies.

When they are stacked as in the naming guide the parts will just play in the correct order.
Hi all, I’ve recently run into a problem with a 19 part movie (The White Queen - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2372220/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ). I have other, smaller, multipart movies that work fine, but in this case it wants to start by playing the last part first.
Initially I thought it was a naming/sorting issue as I had named the parts like this:
The White Queen (2013) - pt1.mp4
…
The White Queen (2013) - pt9.mp4.
The White Queen (2013) - pt10.mp4
…
The White Queen (2013) - pt19.mp4
So I removed the titles from the plex, renamed them as follows and re-added but there was no change:
The White Queen (2013) - pt01.mp4
…
The White Queen (2013) - pt09.mp4.
The White Queen (2013) - pt10.mp4
…
The White Queen (2013) - pt19.mp4
I saw this post which says multipart files are limited to 8 parts (if true, this limit seems arbitrary):
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200264966-naming-multi-file-movies/
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
I use Plex to store movies and the occasional mini-series and do not store TV shows which conceivably this could handle this.
If all else fails I suppose I could try and combine them but I prefer not to.
Hopefully someone has run into this before and can help me out.
Thanks …

That is a ‘mini series’. To treat it like a multi-part movie won’t work with so many parts.
Put it into your tv show library.
With a runtime of 60 minutes for each episode you’ll be much happier that way.
https://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=266092&seasonid=511926&lid=7
A TV Show Library/
…The White Queen/
…Season 01/
…The White Queen - S01E01.mp4
…The White Queen - S01E02 - Episode Name Optional.mp4
…and so on…
Also take the following ‘Bork-Prevention-Steps’ so Plex won’t destroy your world with those embedded Title Tags in your MP4 Files - and the steadfast, never ending belief that Local Media Assets’ default location needs to be at the top (it doesn’t, but there you go)…:
FileBot (link in my signature) can handle that naming and structuring for you automatically or manually in seconds.
What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure, but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Shows and Movies here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Just drag LMA to the bottom of the list and drop it. If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.
Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you may need to write a new bundle for the show or movie so The Plex Dance® was invented:
The Plex Dance®:
- remove show/movie from library
- rescan library files
- empty trash
- clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— scan library files, empty trash, clean bundles - bring names and structures into compliance/Move LMA/etc
- replace corrected show/movie into library
- rescan library files
All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.
Still No Joy?
