I installed the official PLEX server package on my QNAP NAS. Version 0.9.7.17. I added some media files. Streaming media to my LG TV via "Media Link" works like a charm.
To help PLEX identify some of my media files (e.g. to correctly combine stacked files), I had to rename those files as described in the PLEX wiki.
However, PLEX scanners are not as inflexible as described in the Plex Wiki. They are way smarter as described in the documentation.
Example: According to the wiki, TV shows have to be sorted into folders according to season. This means, one would have to create a folder with the season number and put the show files in the correct season folder. Additionaly the wiki says, that one has to encode the season number XX and episode number YY into the file name using a strict sXXeYY naming format. So we end up with paths like ShowName/SeasonXX/ShowName - sXXeYY.ext. This seems redundant and overly strict.
Actually, the PLEX scanners are smarter as documented and also cope with show files that are not sorted into season folders and where season and episodes are more loosely formatted into the file name. They also understand a structure and naming format like : ShowName/ShowName - XXxYY.ext
This is a good thing the developers should not hide. I think this flexibilty should be documented in the Plex wiki.
Cheers,
Dan
