Hi, this may seem like a stupid question, but I was wondering if I have my media stored on a nas, and have plexconnect on my PC, will plexconnect recognise the media on it it’s long as it’s on my plexconnect media server?
So essentially,
Media on nas> plexconnect media server library on PC> plexconnect on Apple TV
Thanks
Sam
It's possible to have the media files in any NAS and PMS installed in any supported PC. PMS will create the metadata files in the PC and will leave the media files untouched in the NAS. Most of us are doing it (instead of installing PMS in the NAS) for performance reasons (transcoding in PMS often requires a lot of CPU speed).
Then there are basically 3 options:
- aTV2 - you can install PlexConnect on it, it will discover the PMS installed in the PC
- aTV3 and a "PlexConnect enabled" NAS - you can install PlexConnect in the NAS, so that aTV3 works (for other purposes) even if the PC is down (the NAS is normally up 24x7). Some people is using wakeup-on-lan to switch on the PC only when needed
- aTV3 and a non-PlexConnect enabled NAS - your best option is to install PlexConnect in the PC, but when the PC is not running the aTV3 will only work for AirPlay
I leave my PC on 24/7 anyway so that should be okay, i was just curious as to whether there would be problems streaming from my NAS, through my PC to my apple tv 3, especially with HD movies
I have plexconnect running on a windows box with my PMS, while my files are on a NAS, and I see no issues at all.

Wired LAN, I suppose
Wired for the main devices, the Upstairs ATV is via wifi at the moment, but am considering getting powerline units but as its not used that often, I have been living with the Wifi, and we really only see issues when watching 1080p content.
Thanks for the replies guys!
